Artificial intelligence has permeated all fields and sectors: from the most superfluous decisions or daily conversations to complex industrial processes. Despite its growing presence, its development continues to be concentrated in a few hands, with the great world powers (such as China or the United States) disputing technological but also geopolitical leadership. In this battle for technological sovereignty, Barcelona aspires to play a key role: developing and producing its own artificial intelligence solutions and made in Europe, with the aim of advancing towards a technologically more competitive Europe.

In this global context, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC) and Tech Barcelona have allied to democratize artificial intelligence with the BSC AI Factory installed in PIER 07. An initiative that is already working at full capacity to accelerate projects that conceive and develop technological solutions based on AI. Months ago, the two institutions began this collaboration with the objective of getting the European Commission to choose Barcelona's candidacy to install one of the thirteen factories of this type that already exist throughout Europe.

After the European Commission opted for Barcelona and after an investment of almost 200 million euros —between European, state and Generalitat funds—, this artificial intelligence factory is now a reality. In total, 1,000 square meters, distributed between two floors of Pier 07 of Tech Barcelona, and the capacity to gather a hundred workers from startups and small and medium-sized companies that develop AI solutions. In fact, this implementation in Pier 07 represents the first time that BSC researchers and professionals leave their large glass enclosure, next to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), to settle in a neuralgic point of the city: Via Laietana, with the purpose of opening up and working more closely with companies and institutions.

A joint work with companies that for the institution is totally necessary, since although "the BSC has consolidated itself as a leading research institution, it is necessary to ensure that all this public investment in research and technology can be transformed and materialized into solutions and new companies in the market, which generate employment and promote a dynamic and leading ecosystem," defends Mariona Sanz, Head of Innovation and Business Development at BSC. It is in this purpose that the BSC AI Factory plays a fundamental role, with a dozen startups already installed in Pier 07, along with some thirty researchers and professionals from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center who will accompany and promote these technological projects.

The companies that have already been installed are still in an initial phase and work in very different sectors, from biomedicine or chemistry to culture, but share a common link: developing solutions with artificial intelligence as a base. Every semester, the BSC will open a new call to select between 10 and 15 companies and accelerate them, with the idea that the accelerated companies can be renewed to broaden their perspective and reach the maximum of the Catalan technological fabric. Thus, the objective is for this initiative to serve a total of 2,000 companies in the coming years and promote more than 500 technological projects.

"Barcelona can become a city that not only consumes and stands out for making use of AI, but is also capable of leading its development and production," remarks Sanz. Even so, for the Catalan capital to acquire this leading role and become one of the European engines, Sanz emphasizes the need to create an ecosystem that accelerates and promotes the technological solutions that different companies and researchers are currently developing in Catalonia.

An ecosystem that, precisely, is intended to be created at Pier 07 of Tech Barcelona, which should serve as a workspace, but also for companies to receive technological and scientific training on the different tools and resources available, as well as personalized advice. At the same time, this space also becomes a meeting and connection point for accelerated projects with other companies that are part of the Tech Barcelona ecosystem: from consolidated companies to specialized investors. In addition, by being part of this BSC AI Factory program —apart from gaining visibility and dissemination—, the selected startups also have free access to the advanced artificial intelligence models that BSC works with, as well as the experience and cutting-edge knowledge of its researchers. In addition to boosting and accelerating these companies that are in earlier stages, the 198 million euros invested in this project will also serve to improve and reinforce the capabilities of the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, which, after its debut at the end of 2023, will be expanded so that it can be used to train and develop generative AI models in different areas such as health, energy, or communications. Likewise, companies that already have their technologies more developed will also be able to access and make use of the supercomputer's infrastructure to develop and scale their artificial intelligence solutions.Christian Canton, director associat del BSC, i Miquel Martí, CEO del Tech Barcelona.

Pier 07, full to the brim

With the arrival and installation of the BSC AI Factory, Pier 07 is completely full.Inaugurated in 2023 and initially focused on projects in the health sector, in just two years it has managed to fill its 5,000 square meters spread over six floors. An evolution and consolidation of Tech Barcelona's spaces that, for Miquel Martí, CEO of the entity, reflects the rapid evolution that the Catalan technological fabric has experienced in recent years. "In little more than a decade, since Tech Barcelona was born in 2013, the ecosystem has evolved and matured very quickly," Martí defends. And precisely the evolution of this ecosystem has led to Pier 07, initially conceived to host projects related to the field of life sciences, has broadened its scopeto become a transversal and multidisciplinary space. "Despite its evolution, one of the main challenges for the sector is that this innovation transcends thestartupsand reach small and medium-sized businesses to increase their productivity and competitiveness." A challenge that, for Martí, can only be achieved with "a broad and transversal perspective, creating workspaces and connections that are also transversal." In fact, with this innovative model, Barcelona can not only become a European leader in artificial intelligence but also seeks to be a benchmark for neighboring countries, sincethe format of the BSC AI Factory has been conceived so that it can be exported to the other member states of the factory:Portugal, Turkey, and Romania. However, this is not the only project of Tech Barcelona, as Pier 07 on Via Laietana is part of the projectUrban Tech Campus of the entity: its network of connected spaces —Pier 01 (located in Port Vell), Pier 03 (also installed in Port Vell and initially specialized inblockchain) and Pier 07— to boost this innovation and technology transfer. With all these spaces (Piers{"text": "El presidente de la República, Nicolás Maduro, anunció este lunes que el próximo 1° de mayo, Día Internacional del Trabajador, se realizará una jornada especial de registro de la Gran Misión Abuelos y Abuelas de la Patria.","translation": "The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, announced this Monday that next May 1st, International Workers' Day, a special registration day for the Great Grandparents and Grandmothers of the Homeland Mission will be held."}already completely occupied by 150 companies, investors, business schools or corporations(a figure that amounts to 1,5000 corporations if the partners that are part of the association are taken into account), Tech Barcelona's current objective is to continue expanding its network and ecosystem. Although for now they do not contemplate inaugurating any new buildings, they do seek to strengthen collaborations with other centers, laboratories and spaces to continue strengthening their community.

The balanced Catalan technological gear

All of this, to favor a Catalan ecosystem in which not only institutions like the BSC play a key role —which not only leads this project, but in recent years has deployed a whole knowledge transfer program, which already totals 14 spin-offs and several patented technologies— or Tech Barcelona, but also other research spaces like the Sincotró Alba or the ICFO, business schools and universities, or centers like Eurecat, Leitat or the DFactory. An ecosystem conducive to the arrival of transnational or European projects, such as the BSC AI Factory, but also the European artificial intelligence gigafactory that the Government is betting on to be installed in the town of Móra la Nova (Ribera d'Ebre). European projects that not only demonstrate Barcelona's capacity to lead AI, but also other technological areas and challenges: such as photonic chips or quantum supercomputing. "Barcelona (and Catalonia) has a powerful resource: talent, understood as people, but also as companies," Martí defends. "The Catalan territory does not have oil, large forests or other natural resources that other European countries do have, but we do have a great potential of local and international talent that we have to take advantage of and promote," adds the CEO of Tech Barcelona.Detall del superordinador del BSC

A talent also emphasized by the Head of Innovation and Business Development, who highlights that the Catalan capital is not only rich in talent, but also in "infrastructure, knowledge, and entrepreneurial initiative." Thus, for Sanz, "Barcelona already has all the ingredients to lead artificial intelligence," and projects like the BSC AI Factory must become the engine that drives and articulates all these ingredients so that the Catalan capital, and in turn Europe, achieve the longed-for technological sovereignty.
