THE SCULPTED CITY

The genius and the penis

Jordi Cabré
It does not represent anyone in particular, nor a historical moment, nor any real, mythological, or religious figure. It is a monument to a concept, to a rather abstract and even indefinable idea. Originally it was going to be a monument dedicated to Isabel II, in 1830, but it ended up becoming the Font del Geni Català. Which genius, specifically? Monturiol? Aribau? Balmes? No: a collective virtue that for the first time appears represented beyond the repeated allegories to industry, the navy, or commerce: now we speak of genius. Of Catalan genius, with wings and a star, of a profoundly pagan appearance. And with other elements of variable dimension and scope, like our supposed genius.
