Barcelona, with its rich mix of history and modernity, stands as an ideal setting for creativity and innovation in all fields. Among its many talents, gastronomy particularly stands out, as the city offers a conducive environment for the most exceptional chefs to shine and set the trend.
The true protagonists of this culinary scene are the restaurateurs who, with effort and dedication, are transforming the gastronomic landscape and raising the level of excellence. These heroes, who never stop believing or dreaming, have shown this year that talent and love for the city can lead to extraordinary results. Choosing only five is a difficult task, but here are those who, in my opinion, are standing out in a special way.
1. Disfrutar: a restaurant of global projection
Located on Villarroel street, Disfrutar has been crowned this year as the best restaurant in the world at The World's 50 Best Restaurants gala held in Las Vegas.
This achievement is the result of years of intense work at El Bulli, where chefs Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro, and Eduard Xatruch perfected their culinary art. After the success of Compartir in Cadaqués, they decided to open Disfrutar a decade ago in the Eixample, right in front of the Ninot Market.
The design of Disfrutar is impressive, paying homage to the Mediterranean with ceramics as a central element. The restaurant offers a gastronomic experience that combines Mediterranean tradition with an avant-garde approach, standing out for its innovative tasting menu. It is not surprising that it has received three Michelin stars and three Soles in the Repsol Guide.
2. Via Veneto: a city classic
On Ganduxer street, near Turó Park, is Via Veneto, a symbol of distinction and tradition in Barcelona. Founded in 1967, this restaurant is a pillar of high Catalan cuisine, maintaining unparalleled prestige in the city, knowing how to combine the excellence of the cuisine and service in the dining room.
The kitchen, led by chef David Andrés together with the Monje family, offers a tribute to traditional Catalan cuisine, but with contemporary touches that provide an innovative twist. This approach has been recognized with a Michelin star and three Soles in the Repsol Guide.
One of Via Veneto's greatest prides is its impressive wine cellar, located eight meters underground and considered one of the best in the city, with a collection of thousands of wines. Over the years, the restaurant has been the preferred spot for numerous prominent figures in Catalan political and cultural life, including Salvador Dalí.
3. Colmado Wilmot: conceptual innovation
Located on Calvet street, Colmado Wilmot is more than a bar or delicatessen: it is a celebration of good eating. It was conceived by Eugenio de Diego, originally from Badalona and one of the former head chefs during El Bulli's golden age. He has also managed other successful projects, such as Bar Lombo and Pintarroja Menorca.
This space has evolved into a bar-bodega with selected products. It offers a gastronomic proposal that pays homage to pantries and homemade meals, standing out for off-menu dishes that vary according to the season.
4. Fiskebar: a very cool place
Located at Paseo de Ítaca 3, in Port Vell, Fiskebar is one of the outstanding restaurants of the prestigious Tragaluz group. This establishment presents itself as a meeting point between the northern sea and the southern light, offering an experience where Barcelona is seen from the sea. Its design, by Isern Serra, achieves a serene, warm, and architectural atmosphere with Nordic lines that highlight its maritime surroundings.
In fact, the space is inspired by Danish fiskeskur (fishing huts) and the menu focuses on seafood products prepared with Nordic and Mediterranean influences. Beyond its gastronomic offer, Fiskebar has a Cocktail Bar perfect for enjoying cocktails with the best views.
5. Nomo Eixample: the democratization of Japanese food
This July, the Barcelona-based Nomo group has opened its fourth Japanese restaurant in the city, in the emblematic location of the former Casa Dario seafood restaurant, on Consell de Cent with Aribau.
This new establishment maintains the essence of its predecessors, incorporates a cocktail bar, and plans to expand its menu with fish and dishes prepared on a Japanese grill. This proposal, although young, deserves a prominent place on the list because it carries Nomo's distinctive seal.
Since its first restaurant in 2007, Nomo's goal has always been to create a modern, innovative, and cosmopolitan Japanese restaurant that has become a benchmark for lovers of good food. If you are a lover of Japanese food and are looking for a gastronomic experience that combines authenticity and modernity, Nomo is always a perfect place.
These five restaurants are just some of the many temples of gastronomy in Barcelona, standing out for their projection, their commitment to quality, and their ability to offer exceptional culinary experiences in the city. And the list could go on, this selection is just the beginning.
