'El barquer' and 'Com vaig aprendre a conduir' lead the nominations for the IX Teatre Barcelona Awards

One more year (and it's already nine!), Teatre Barcelona presents its Awards to recognize the great scenic quality in our home. These awards are designed to unite professionals with the public, since the final vote and, therefore, the winners of the contest come from the spectators. The professional jury has chosen the nominated productions for this edition and, now, it is the public who is in charge of voting for the works that have moved them the most throughout the season.

In this edition, the number of selected works demonstrates the good state of the performing arts in the Catalan capital: a total of 87 productions are eligible for an award in one of the 19 competitive categories, ranging from large-format text theater to dance, circus, magic, opera or family proposals.

The Ferryman and How I Learned to Drive: the most nominated works

At the top of the list, the Teatre Lliure production El barquer is the great favorite of this ninth edition, accumulating 5 nominations. The production is eligible for the Best Theatrical Show award, but also adds significant nominations such as Best Direction for Julio Manrique, Best Performance for Roger Casamajor and a double recognition in the supporting performance category for Imma Colomer and Anna Güell.

Closely following is Com vaig aprendre a conduir, the successful proposal from Sala Beckett that accumulates 4 nominations. The show, directed by Marilia Samper, also competes as Best Theatrical Show and adds award options for the work of its leading couple, with Mireia Aixalà as best actress and Ivan Benet in the supporting category.

Very distributed candidacies with a strong emphasis on proximity

Beyond the two most nominated major titles, the list shows the good health currently in the text theater and proximity venues sector. With 3 nominations, proposals such as Tu em vas prometre una història d'amor (candidate for Best Show, Direction for Israel Solà and Authorship for Helena Tornero) stand out, as well as small-format phenomena such as Permagel at Teatre Texas, Compto cada passa meva sobre la terra and Tinc un bosc al cervell.

As for musical theater, the duel of this IX edition will be fought between La Cubana and its show L'amor venia en taxi (with nominations for its authorship and for actor Oriol Burés) and the revision of the classic Germans de sang at Teatre Condal, supported by the candidacies of Mariona Castillo and Roc Bernadí.

The public has the last word

The nominations are made by theater experts, but the resolution of the final winners is up to the public. And it is that the Premis Teatre Barcelona put the final verdict in the hands of those who fill the seats night after night.

Voting is now open through its official website (teatrebarcelona.com/premis) and will remain active until September 13. Participation is completely free and open to any spectator who wants to support their favorite productions and performers of the year.

The great celebration of the performing arts in Barcelona will take place on Monday, September 28 starting at 8:00 p.m., in a face-to-face gala at the Paral·lel 62 venue where all the winners of the IX edition will be revealed.
