The Christmas market of the Port of Barcelona kicks off

Nadal al Port recovers the commercial and gastronomic stalls from the first edition, as well as the 65-meter-high Ferris wheel and the carousel. As a novelty, it adds a giant 12-meter-high ball to its offer of attractions.

The third edition of Nadal al Port has kicked off with more than 85,000 LED lights shining on the Moll de la Fusta. The traditional lighting of the lights took place this Thursday at 6 in the afternoon. The Port Vell has become the setting for the preview of the Liceo opera co-created with the Raval neighborhood, La gata perduda, performed by associations and entities from the neighborhood. This year's edition of the event organized by the Port de Barcelona aims to become a meeting point for entities and music schools from neighboring neighborhoods, as was evident on opening day. Neighborhood associations will also star in different performances every day.

The start of the festivities in the Port also featured performances on the historic Pailebot Santa Eulàlia ship, one of the vessels that light up for Christmas and, as could not be otherwise, the lighting of the lights itself. The most important part of the inauguration fell to children of Port de Barcelona workers, as was done a year ago.

Once the lights were turned on, by plugging them into electricity, the novelties of this edition could be discovered. An overhead lighting illuminates the entire space, 200 meters long and 20 meters wide, in addition to paper boats hanging along the route, becoming the central element of this edition. Another novelty is a 12-meter-high Christmas ball, which can be crossed from the inside.

The terrestrial lighting of the Port de Barcelona will be complemented with Christmas motifs for access and traffic through the enclosure and lighting of the lampposts on the Moll del Dipòsit and the Paseo Joan de Borbó. In the maritime part, as in previous editions, a nativity scene and the Star of the East illuminate the sheet of water while, moored at the Moll de la Fusta, the historic boats of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, the Pailebot Santa Eulàlia and the Far Barcelona, are decorated for the occasion and can be visited.

In comparison with the 2020 Christmas celebration on the waterfront, this year the trade and gastronomy market organized in the first edition has been recovered, as well as the 65-meter high Ferris wheel and the traditional carousel, among other attractions. Last Christmas, the pandemic forced a reduction in the format of Nadal al Port and these attractions could not be enabled to allow for social distancing.

Until Thursday, January 6, the Port of Barcelona will offer a light show accompanied by music every night. This will join the rest of the activities organized in the city to liven up Christmas, such as the new lighting in Plaza Catalunya, Gran Via and Aragó street; the illuminated route of the Sant Pau modernist complex; the immersive light forest in the Jardins de Pedralbes, or the cultural activities program of Paseo de Gràcia.

The third edition of Nadal al Port aims to "contribute to the economic, social and cultural recovery of the city; consolidate the Moll de la Fusta as a meeting point that strengthens the relationship between the port and the city, and foster maritime culture and heritage among citizens," says the president of the Port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet. The maritime institution, which has invested some 196,000 euros in this initiative, expects to reach the 2.5 million visitors it gathered in 2019.

Dissemination and solidarity

Nadal al Port will take the opportunity to disseminate the activity carried out by the Port of Barcelona, bringing it closer to children through various initiatives. For example, the little ones will be able to learn how waste is collected from the waters or become stevedores by moving cargo containers.

The activity carried out in the Port will be brought closer to the little ones and the music schools of the neighboring neighborhoods will fill the stage with different performances every day
Likewise, theSolidarity Container, the campaign organized annually by the Port Community of Barcelona to collect food, will have a prominent presence at this Christmas event. The idea is to bring this solidarity campaign, which is being held for the sixteenth consecutive year, closer to the people of Barcelona, in order to obtain the maximum number of economic contributions that will be transformed into food at the Food Bank. The collection will be made exclusively online through the Port of Barcelona website and fair visitors will find instructions on how to make their contributions.
