The Port faces a 2026 of investments and reputational reinforcement

The infrastructure closes 2025 again with revenues above 200 million euros, and opens 2026 managing the railway crisis by moving goods by truck and asking for a contingency plan to prevent track closures from recurring

More than 200 million euros in revenue, a profit of 59 million, and an "absolute record" in imports, with a balance with exports of around 720,000 containers. These are the figures with which the Port of Barcelona closed 2025, during which more than 5.7 million passengers passed through the infrastructure; 2.3 million of them visited Barcelona, through a port that wants to continue opening up to the city.

With these results, the Port is preparing for a new investment cycle, in which more than 300 million will be allocated to improving the infrastructure from multiple angles throughout 2026. However, the year has begun marked by the railway cuts that have been affecting daily life and the Catalan economy for two weeks.

Despite the cuts and incidents that have blocked train circulation to the north and limited the southbound direction, the port has not seen its operations blocked, but has resorted to truck transport. "There has been sufficient capacity for truck transport, but we need to have a railway contingency plan," highlighted the President of the Port, José Alberto Carbonell.

This contingency plan will be key not only for the Port's operations, but also for its reputation. "First, the crisis must be resolved; it is not yet resolved, and it will be when trains can depart at their usual commercial times. Afterwards, the contingency plan will have to come. Reputation is the result of communication that explains what happened and guarantees that it will not happen again."

"We have to make a contingency plan and show customers that this situation will not happen again," Carbonell emphasized. Now, the forecast is that the Rubí tunnel can reopen on Thursday, and that circulation on the Gelida tracks can resume in restricted hours next Monday, still without recovering the usual commercial schedules.

A horizon of 300 million in investment

In parallel, the Port is advancing in the promotion of strategic projects with which it enters a newinverter cycle, for which seven major projects totaling 332 million euros have already been tendered. "And this year we are starting nine major projects for an amount of 338.7 million," Carbonell highlighted. Investments range from port infrastructure projects —such as the remodeling of the Ponent Nord dock and the reinforcement of the Nord entrance dike—, as well as road and rail accessibility, in addition to initiatives to continue opening the port to the city.

Portal de la Pau

In this opening, what will be the Port's "fundamental tool" to connect with citizens begins to take shape: the Port Center. Located on the ground floor of the Portal de la Pau building, the building's works will be finished in a couple or three months, and the furniture and technology for the interior will soon be awarded, from which the port and its impact will be explained to the people of Barcelona. As Carbonell highlighted, initiatives beyond the physical also contribute to this opening process, such as Nadal al Port and the open days in spring, which are already preparing to return for their third edition in May.

Record imports and a "healthy financial situation"

All this, after a 2025 in which the operating result stood at 47 million euros, 6% less than the previous year, mainly for one reason: the financing operation of the new coffee terminal, theBarcelona International Terminal(BIT), in which the Port assumes a third of the 30 million investment that its construction will entail —without this operation, the result would have been 57 million, 14% more than the previous year—.

Goods traffic is one of the factors contributing to these results. In 2025, it has once again approached 70 tons: specifically, it has been 69.5, practically the same as in 2024. The figure has been maintained with fewer containers, but fuller, and with an "absolute record" in imports, as detailed by the Port's general director, Àlex Garcia.

So much so that in 2025 imports increased by 4%, an increase that surpassed 719,000 containers. On the other hand, 721,000 containers were exported, in an "equilibrium" in which China is the main protagonist. In fact, China, the United States, and Turkey are, once again, the port's main commercial partners —China stands out with a market share of 28%, while the United States and Turkey follow with a distant 6% and 5%---.

In this context, the Port has once again positioned itself as the main contributor to the state port system, with 14.6 million euros. This is not a minor figure, as it represents 45% more than the second. All of this, in a "healthy financial situation," according to the Port's Deputy General Director of Finance, Corporate Management, and Strategy, Míriam Alaminos: 88 million in bank debt —18 less than the previous year— and a treasury balance of 365 million, in a key financial situation to advance the Port's strategic projects.
