The Liceu revalidates artistic direction and sets the roadmap until 2026

Víctor Garcia de Gomar will continue as artistic director for the next four years to consolidate his project and transform the operatic institution into a center for the arts and thought, without neglecting lyrical activity.

The Board of Trustees of the Gran Teatre del Liceu has approved the strategic plan for 2023-2026, which reaffirms its mission to inspire, impact, and transform societies and individuals through art, and, specifically, opera. The new roadmap aims to consolidate the artistic project initiated by Víctor Garcia de Gomar in 2019 and revalidates him in the position for the next four years, with the challenge of continuing to work to make the Liceu a center for the arts and thought, with opera as the main subject. Thus, the operatic institution will continue to bet on top-level singers, the use of new languages, as well as the promotion of new international co-productionswith reference theaters, as demonstrated by the program it has designed forthe 2022/2023 season, which will continue with the activities of commemoration of the 175th anniversary. In addition, it will continue to recover musical heritage and provide opportunities for the country's creators without forgetting its growth towards the excellence of artistic groups. It will also renews for the next four years the figure of the artist in residence, currently Àlex Ollé, from La Fura dels Baus, which carries out stage advice, artistic programming and the work of "mentoring new stage directors so that they can successfully face their career in the operatic genre". In the period of the new strategic plan, the principal conductor Josep Pons, with the collaboration of Pablo Assante at the head of the Cor del Teatre, will continue working for stable reference bodies, completing the agreed vacant positions and exercising the muscle of the Orchestra and Choir through concerts, chamber music or the great symphonic cycle.

The president of the board of trustees, Salvador Alemany, maintains that the current model of the theater is essential to make the economic balance of the institution compatible with the highest possible quality of its artistic proposal, but also to achieve the objectives in educational and social projects and in those of international projection, both in terms of foreign audiences who can enjoy opera in Barcelona and by intensifying initiatives with other institutions around the world. The dissemination of the program and its contents will be a tool that will be maintained and improved in the coming years throughLiceu+ (liceuplus.com),the audiovisual platform that includes the digital subscriptionLiceu+ LIVEThe general director of the Liceu, Valentí Oviedo, considers that the artistic and socio-educational project of the center "has already been largely intuited this season and now it is necessary to consolidate it and transform it in the rest of the areas that allow it to solidify and be viable and possible in the long term as well."More budget and public involvementThe board of trustees foresees an increasing budget where own revenues are not less than 50% of the total and that contributions from public administrations remain around 50% throughout the plan's validity. The objective is for Barcelona's opera house to be a European benchmark and to grow in quality, prestige, and service to society, maintaining economic balance, as desired by the institution's leaders.

These forecasts take as reference the budget for the 22/23 season, estimated at 51.4 million euros, a volume higher than the previous season, with 49.5 million euros. In these accounts, 52% will come from own revenues, while administrations will represent the remaining 48%.

In the economic line, it has also been proposed to increase income from patronage (that these be 14% of total own income) and to continue with the line of increasing the number of benefactors, natural persons. The growing interest in the individual support program already made the Gran Teatre consider the importance of strengthening this figure by creating a Board of Benefactors, an organization created last May whose objectives include increasing public involvement with the theater's artistic seasons and encouraging new adhesions, as well as organizing loyalty actions. In this regard, Rosario Cabané joins the board of trustees as president of the Board of Benefactors. For his part, Alfons Rodés, upon completion of his mandate, leaves the board of trustees after 7 years of dedication. The approach to all audiences and society in general will follow the steps taken so far with the launch of projects that have become enriching such asThe Liceu for all, with the programsLiceuAprènandLiceuApropathat seek to generate opportunities, knowledge and experiences. futura segunda sede Liceu
