The Barcelona Science Park (PCB) continues to add milestones in its 25th anniversary. The 125 entities it hosts in its facilities have broken an absolute record for funding raised, managing to raise 142 million euros in 2022. With these results, those of 2021 have quadrupled, when they were 39 million euros.
"The strong growth figures in financing and investment led by our entities are a symptom of confidence and commitment to these projects, most of which promise a very hopeful future for the entire health ecosystem, starting with the industry and ending with the patient," says Maria Terrades, director of the PCB.
In this record year, private capital represented almost 60% of the resources raised, with 83 million euros. The main protagonist was SpliceBio, which closed a 50 million euro round led by Ysios Capital and UCB Ventures. This is the largest operation signed by a company located in the PCB, as well as the highest raised by a biotech in Spain. Also noteworthy were the rounds of DeepUll, of 13 million euros, and Pangaea Oncology, of 12 million euros.
In addition, public funding has been an important leg for PCB companies. Among them is INBRAIN Neuroelectronics, which has received 17.5 million euros from the EIC Accelerator program. Also noteworthy are Aptadel Therapeutics, with 3.65 million euros, and Gate2Brain, with 3.12 million euros.
The good results of the resident companies reinforce the PCB's expansion plans, after having achieved full occupancy of its 100,000 square meters this 2023. It is planned to add 1,900 square meters of offices in a space that remained to be enabled when the construction works were finished, the Cub building. For this, partners are being sought to undertake the investment, of about six million euros. In addition, the Generalitat, the Barcelona City Council and the UB have reached an agreement to expand the scientific complex, just in front of the current PCB facilities, where a 10,000 square meter building will be built.
