Green light for Silence to manufacture in the Free Zone in July

The Nissan reindustrialization table has assigned the electric vehicle brand a 60,000 m2 plot, in the former facilities of the Japanese company, where it will produce a new two-seater passenger car

Finally, the future of the old Nissan plant in the Zona Franca fades away. The electric vehicle brand Silence has been awarded a 60,000 square meter plot to set up starting in July and begin production of a two-seater electric vehicle, called S04. For now, the Catalan brand, which designs and produces electric motorcycles, is working on this new project, which involves an investment of 30 million euros and the hiring of a hundred people, from its factory in Sant Boi de Llobregat. The green light was activated on Monday by the Nissan reindustrialization table, made up of the Government, the Generalitat, the automotive multinational, and the unions. The meeting also served to directly award the plot that the Nissan Technical Center in Barcelona will occupy, according to a statement from the table sent this Tuesday. Silence, which has Acciona as its main shareholder, reached an agreement with former Nissan workersto start activity in the Free Trade Zone with the incorporation of 110 people ---10% of the1,400 employees who were left without work in December 2021---. This "minimum" number of relocations and the delay in the entire reindustrialization process have aroused the reluctance of the unions, which demand that "the decision-making and the meetings in which they blame each other, and where in the end the only ones affected are the workers who continue to exhaust our unemployment benefits," they indicated.
Currently, Silence has a factory in Sant Boi de Llobregat, where it develops the project and manufactures electric motorcycles.
In the coming weeks, the members of the board will work to formalize the rental contracts for these two plots with the Consorci de Zona Franca de Barcelona to give a definitive boost to their projects. Previously, the Consortium, which owns the land, will also accelerate the finalization of the tender specifications for the public tender for the management of this industrial area, which is expected to be launched in the second half of June. With this timeline, it will not be until mid-September that the name of the operator that will manage these lands, in which se integrarán will be known.the electromobility hub projectsand ofSilence, as well as a logistical one, not yet finalized. nissan zona franca

For his part, the head of Nissan's industrial operations in Spain, Frank Torres, has stated that the automaker "is clear about the possible agreements with Silence and the hub to ensure the transfer of assets and other details that both investors have asked us for to give viability to their projects" and has indicated that now it only remains to launch the tender for the operator of the land.
