The congress and trade fair industry is in constant transformation. Digitalization, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and new attendee habits are redefining how professional events are designed, produced, and experienced. The MICE sector (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) is moving towards highly technological, more flexible, hybrid, personalized, and impact-oriented formats.

In this context, Barcelona has consolidated itself as the world capital of congresses thanks to a unique combination of infrastructure, talent, connectivity, and strategic vision. The city has a highly notable event agenda for this 2026, with a multitude of internationally renowned events such as the Mobile, the 4YFN, the ISE or the Smart City Expo World Congress. This year, furthermore, it will be the World Capital of Architecture and the venue for the Congress of the International Union of Architects.

In recent years, the city has led international rankings —according to the annual report of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), where Barcelona consistently ranks among the top positions— and has managed to anticipate new trends in the MICE sector. Its commitment to versatile spaces, advanced technology, certified sustainability, and high-value urban experiences places it at the forefront of destinations that best integrate the hybrid format, AI-driven personalization, and the creation of events with real impact. Barcelona hosts congresses and transforms them into global platforms for knowledge, innovation, and community.

The passion that drives the MICE sector

Those of us who work in congress organization know that it is above all a way of life, of understanding business and connections between people. What hooks you are not the long hours, nor the unforeseen events, nor the pressure of live events. What is passionate is something much deeper: to create encounters that transform people.

Every congress is an opportunity to connect talent, generate knowledge, boost sectors, and make something important happen. We creatively shape an idea that becomes a space full of energy, conversations, and discoveries. It's about building experiences that leave a mark, even if no one sees the invisible work behind it.

For this reason, the people behind the MICE sector vibrate with what they do because they know that, when the doors open and the event comes to life, all the effort turns into an unrepeatable experience; each congress is a world. And few professions offer such an intense mix of creativity, logistics, emotion, and purpose.

But, where are the trends in congress organization moving? In this list, we review the trends that will mark the immediate future of the sector, based on recent industry studies.

  1. Consolidation of the hybrid format and advanced virtualization
Although in-person events have regained strength, and people continue to bet on in-person: smart networking and human connection, the hybrid format has consolidated as the standard and has already integrated as an extension. This is demonstrated by the report Top Trends in Cvent's 2026 Events, that evidences that it is gaining prominence. However, it is true that in B2B events the emotional factor remains key. In addition, the report also points out that attendees are increasingly looking to personalize their experience. In this context, exclusivity and micro-events increase interest and theengagement, while data protection becomes fundamental to build trust and strengthen organizing brands.

  1. Sustainability as an essential criterion
Sustainability is today a strategic requirement. The same study highlights that environmental awareness drives organizers to adopt more responsible practices: venues with ecological policies, plastic reduction, local economy, and carbon footprint measurement. For its part, attendees and sponsors also demand events aligned with ESG criteria, a fact that is transforming the entire value chain.
  1. Extreme personalization thanks to AI
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the assistant experience. Advanced analytics allows offering:
  • AI for every stage of the event. From generative AI to agentive AI
  • Personalized session recommendations
  • Smart agendas
  • Automated networking based on professional interests
  • Even so, people seek contact with other human beings
The cited study indicates that the personalization has become a key factor in increasing satisfaction and the perceived value of the event.
  1. Record growth in the fair sector and international expansion
The report UFI Global Exhibition Barometer 2026 confirms that the fair industry is experiencing a record year, with an overall revenue increase of 17% compared to the previous year. In addition, 77% of organizers plan to expand business lines and 43% plan to expand to new countries.

This growth is driven by:

  • The recovery of in-person activity
  • The diversification of formats
  • The adoption of generative AI in sales, marketing and production

  1. Participation and immersive experiences
The 2026 trends highlight the importance of real-time interaction, with participatory dynamics, gamification, and spaces designed to foster creativity and exchange. The most innovative events incorporate:
  • Collaborative sessions
  • Immersive experiences
  • Co-creation spaces
  1. Hybrid events as an efficiency and reach solution
The hybrid format expands the audience and optimizes costs and logistics. According to OnSite, in 2025 hybrid events consolidated as the preferred format for their balance between in-person and virtual attendance.

  1. Professionalization and strategic planning
The guide Congresses and Conventions 2026 underlines that the choice of venue, accessibility, technological infrastructure, and staff experience are critical factors for the success of a congress. In this regard, Spain positions itself as one of the most attractive MICE destinations due to its connectivity, hotel offerings, and cultural diversity.

In conclusion, we can affirm that the sector is in full reinvention. Congresses and fairs are evolving towards more:

  • Technological (AI, AR, advanced platforms)
  • Sustainable (integrated ESG criteria)
  • Inclusive (diversity culture)
  • Personalized (tailored experiences)
  • Global (international expansion)
  • Participatory (constant interaction and immersive experiences)

The MICE industry is at a turning point where technology, sustainability, and personalization completely redefine the way a congress is conceived. Recent studies agree that future events will be more hybrid, more measurable, and focused on the human experience, relying on artificial intelligence to provide value before, during, and after the meeting. In this new scenario, organizers who can integrate innovation, impact, and narrative will be the ones to lead the next decade of the sector.

For all these reasons, at Women Evolution (WE) we are committed to an increasingly immersive congress format, where the space is as important as what happens in it, experiencing an agile dynamic that prioritizes connection between people with common interests, diverse, high-quality networking with relevant profiles, and content focused on innovation, artificial intelligence, and the transformation of organizations towards a more inclusive culture that fosters the talent of female executives, CEOs, professional women, and expert leaders.

The talent gathered at the congresses we organize in Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona is one of our strengths, both for the speakers who deliver the presentations and for the attendees and representatives of valuable and committed brands, aligned with the SDGs and ESG criteria.

We are preparing the next edition of the WE Barcelona Congress, for October 15 at Esade. After seven editions, "WE" has consolidated itself as an essential meeting point to boost female talent, the leadership of professional, entrepreneurial, managerial, and businesswomen, and to promote a real transformation in the business and social spheres. This year, more male allies will join us in the arduous task of raising awareness among companies to move towards greater diversity and inclusion, where female talent can develop its full potential and be part of the great transformations underway, digital, new business models with AI, geopolitical challenges, more human and sustainable organizations.
