The America's Cup can already be savored this year. All teams will be training in Barcelona waters starting this June, accompanying the Swiss team, which has been doing so since last summer. But they will also be seen facing each other. The organizers of the competition have announced that the first of the three preliminary regattas will take place in Vilanova i la Geltrú next September.
"Its port is perfect," defends Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand, the winning team of the previous America's Cup edition and responsible for organizing the upcoming one in 2024. "Our town will be a fantastic venue," adds its mayor, Olga Arnau.
The six teams are expected to train a few meters from the entrance to the port of Vilanova i la Geltrú. In addition, various spaces will be set up for fans to watch the competition.
There will be four days of competition in Vilanova i la Geltrú, with a first day of training and three more of competition, with round-robin matches and duels. This first contact will be held between September 14 and 17.
The teams will compete with smaller boats than those they will use in the 2024 regattas, with space for four crew members instead of eight. Precisely, these AC40 class vessels will be seen in the parallel regattas of the 37th edition of the America's Cup, featuring teams made up of young athletes and, for the first time, women.
