Two months after announcing it, the advanced robotics hub project that the company Unmanned Life wants to develop in Barcelona, has started to walk: the British company has rented an industrial warehouse in 22@.
The premises, with a total surface area of 1,295 square meters distributed over 4 floors, are located in the Poblenou industrial estate, a short distance from Avenida Diagonal. Unmanned Life plans to hire about twenty people for the Barcelona center, who will join the current innovation team.
The British company develops advanced robotics technology that allows the management of large fleets of robots and drones and until now operated part of its innovation base from Brussels (Belgium), but the weather is a key element to validate its products, and Barcelona is a good location. This was highlighted by the CEO of Unmanned Life (UM Autonomous Systems), Nicolas Zylberglajt, who stated that "one of the key reasons for its relocation has been Barcelona's weather conditions, much more favorable than those in Belgium, making flying drones easier and safer."
On the other hand, the technological company's decision was influenced by the fact that the Catalan capital has an important advanced innovation ecosystem and has a prominent position in the robotics industry. Likewise, there is also a development of the ICT sector.
Gerard Plana, director of industrial and logistics at the real estate company Forcadell, which advised the British group on this operation, highlighted that "the success of the consolidation of 22@ as a technological district has been thanks to the diversity of the real estate offer that the area proposes, capable of adapting to the different needs of demand." According to Plana, corporations can opt not only for new corporate buildings, but also for industrial facilities, in an environment with all kinds of services and excellent communications with the city."
Last November, Unmanned Life also announced the closing of a 2.3 million euro funding round led by Telus Ventures (Canada), the strategic investment arm of communications technology company Telus Corporation, and Wayra, Telefónica's open innovation hub. Other key investors included Venionaire Capital, Jota2Group, MOTEC Ventures, and Alpere Capital.
The investment will lead to a new phase of development for the British brand's Artificial Intelligence software that deploys, controls, and orchestrates multiple types of robots connected through different networks, such as WIFI, 4G, and 5G. This software has broad potential, especially in the field of Industry 4.0.
