September is off to a strong start on Barcelona's theater scene. After a few weeks of calm in the theater world, the first week of the season presents some of the most anticipated revivals, such as the re-premiere of La primera ley de Newton and the fourth consecutive season of the hit show Poncia, based on García Lorca's La Casa de Bernarda Alba, starring Lolita as the maid.
Lighthearted comedies, intimate theater, major tributes, and contemporary adaptations are all on offer in the city's venues this week.
Desaparellats at Espai Texas
From August 25 to September 20, 2026
Esther López (from La Calòrica) and Ricard Farré (known for his role in the hit Les dones sàvies) star in this wild yet tender comedy about second chances and life-changing decisions. Written by Ramon Pardina, who is also a scriptwriter for Andreu Buenafuente and Quim Masferrer, and directed by Roc Esquius, the story follows Ton and Anna, a couple trapped in routine who discover a door to a parallel universe in their bathroom. There they find different versions of themselves that make them question if the life they lead is really the one they want.
Consulta familiar at El Maldà
From September 2 to October 4, 2026
After selling out tickets at the Grec Festival de Barcelona, this intimate production returns to El Maldà. It marks the Barcelona debut of Mallorcan playwright Marga Arrom.
Consulta familiar is a play that talks about family relationships through Sílvia, a woman who goes to therapy to manage her relationship with her mother, just before Christmas. Everything gets complicated when the lives of the patient, the therapist, and the mother intertwine in a web of secrets, misunderstandings, and uncomfortable confessions.
El hijo de la cómica at Teatre Romea
From September 2 to October 4, 2026
José Sacristán returns to Barcelona's stage with an intimate, moving tribute to actor, director, and writer Fernando Fernán-Gómez. Through a monologue based on memory, experiences, and shared dialogues between the two over the years, Sacristán gives voice to his late friend's childhood memories, fears, dreams of freedom, and family roots — a nostalgic journey for audiences to reconnect with the voice of one of Spanish culture's great names.
Poncia at Teatre Goya
From September 2 to September 27, 2026
Written and directed by Luis Luque based on Federico García Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba, this show places Poncia (Lolita Flores) in the midst of a sea of silence and fog, just after Adela's death. Through reflections, soliloquies, and dialogues with shadows, the maid analyzes guilt, social class, education, freedom, and sexuality from the perspective of the mistreated and silenced working class.
Primera Ley de Newton at La Villarroel
From September 2 to October 4, 2026
Eu Manzanares' latest play, directed by Nelson Valente, returns to the stage. After its success at Grec 2026, this story tackles an educational dilemma centered on ethics, inequality, and opportunities.
The plot places us in an award-winning, high-needs school that is shaken when it is discovered that Izan, a student about to graduate, has cheated on a subject. Pressure from the student's mother to secure his diploma, combined with the arrival of a journalist, puts the teaching staff's principles to the test.
Ella y máquina at Heartbreak Hotel
From September 2 to October 11, 2026
Written and directed by Sergi Belbel, this piece portrays contemporary alienation and the pitfalls of the capitalist system with acidity, irony, and a sense of humor. Enric Cambray and Àgata Roca star in a story about the struggles and headaches of a smart, sensitive woman who decides to break away from the order imposed by bourgeois society.
La estanquera del Raval at Sala Fènix
From September 2 to September 20, 2026
The company Pecado Tarambana brings to Sala Fènix a contemporary adaptation of the 1980s theater classic La Estanquera de Vallecas, by José Luis Alonso de Santos, relocated to the present-day Raval neighborhood.
The play addresses themes such as job insecurity, poverty, and meritocracy when a tobacco-shop robbery takes an unexpected turn. The conflict erupts when, unexpectedly, a certain empathy is created between the two assailants, the tobacconist, and her granddaughter.
