This week, Barcelona's billboard presents new theater plays ranging from European dramaturgy to local creation. Between September 14 and 20, the city's venues host productions that have already been seen on the Barcelona scene, such as, for example, the revival of The Threepenny Opera, Tendrament or Fantastic Things Will Happen at Flyhard. However, we will also see new productions such as the adaptation of A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf or the Beckett series dedicated to Oriol Genís.
The Threepenny Opera at Teatre Lliure
The Teatre Lliure de Montjuïc will re-premiere on September 17 The Threepenny Opera, the classic by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann. Directed by Marta Pazos, with musical direction by Dani Espasa and translation by Marc Rosich, this co-production with the Grec Festival celebrates the 50th anniversary of both institutions and will be in the Sala Fabià Puigserver until October 11.
The plot places us in the underworld of London where crime and institutions share codes and ambitions. After the secret wedding between the criminal Mackie the Knife and Polly Peachum, the young woman's family will pull all their strings to imprison him. But it will be here when the sewers of the State will begin to be seen: the alliances of the police chief, Tiger Brown, with the London mafia.
Tendrament at Teatre Akadèmia
Judit Colomer and Pau Vinyals return to present from September 16 to October 9 at the Teatre Akadèmia their first joint creation show. Tendrament was already seen at the Sala Beckett and achieved resounding success with both public and critics. The play breaks the fourth wall at all times and turns the audience into an accomplice of the existential crisis of its creators and performers. On stage, the couple questions the social norm about job stability, housing, and couple relationships.
The piece proposes that we dare to escape the comfort zone to discover other alternative paths focused on affection, desire, and pleasure. Based on philosophical references such as those of Paul B. Preciado, the scene is stripped down to build a collective complicity experience with the audience.
A Room of One's Own at Teatre Raval
The Teatre Raval will host from September 16 to 27 the new version A Room of One's Own, a monologue performed by Clara Sanchis based on the essay that Virginia Woolf wrote in 1928 about women and literature. After more than a decade of uninterrupted success on stage, this adaptation directed by María Ruiz brings back to the present the brilliance, humor, and sharpness of the British writer's original text.
The proposal takes us to the talks given by Woolf at Newnham College and Girton College in Cambridge before the first generation of university women. Sanchis establishes a dialogue with the 21st-century audience about the relationship between gender, freedom, and literature, with live piano music integrated into the piece. The work contrasts the context of the 1920s with contemporary debates on equality.
Fantastic things will happen at Sala FlyHard
The Sala FlyHard will program from September 16 to October 5 Fantastic things will happen, a comedy with hints of mystery written and directed by Jordi Casado and Sílvia Navarro. The story places us in a Barcelona apartment where an unemployed accountant is dedicated to running a podcast about real events. But, suddenly, he will become a kind of spy to investigate the disappearance of his neighbor.
The protagonist's obsession with uncovering the suspect becomes the engine of a satire about the search for fame, the phenomenon of true crime, and the small daily surprises that escape our control.
The kiwi fish night at Golem'S
From September 19 to October 18, the Golem'S venue will present The kiwi fish night, a text written and directed by Josep Julien and featuring the performance of Santi Ricart. The monologue shows us the fall of a Barcelona actor who lives immersed in professional and personal frustration when, after a domestic incident, he decides to leave his life behind.
The play moves between thriller, melodrama, and black comedy to explain the contradictions of a professional deceiver in his attempt to escape his own shadows. A story that shows the shadows, uncertainties, and emotional cracks of contemporary society.
Bartleby at Sala Atrium
Llàtzer Garcia adapts the classic Bartleby, the scrivener by Herman Melville in a one-man show interpreted by Albert Prat that will be at the Sala Atrium from September 15 to 27. The famous phrase "I would prefer not to" defines the attitude of the Wall Street man who, with great politeness, begins to reject any order or task entrusted by his boss.
The staging is based on the bewilderment and progressive fascination of the lawyer in the face of his employee's peaceful resistance. From this dynamic, the production transforms Bartleby's resignation into a critique of the labor system and the tyranny of productivity.
Una nit amb Andrés Villarrosa at Sala Beckett
The Beckett will host, from September 16 to 20, Una nit amb Andrés Villarrosa, a proposal where actor Oriol Genís steps into the shoes of his alter ego. Villarrosa, self-proclaimed "the melodic singer of the methodical tremor," returns to the stage flaunting his unmistakable pompadour, his drawn mole, and an attitude that oscillates between pathos and the most sincere devotion to the show.
Inspired by the world of the now defunct Bodega Bohemia in Barcelona, the show pays tribute to the circuit of underground artists who populated cabaret and varieté in past decades. Genís will revive a repertoire of forgotten titles such as Hermano, La canción del guau guau, Vaya chófer or Mambo Caracoles, jewels of decadent humor.
