Not only do future entrepreneurs need to be trained, their projects also need to be financed. This is the philosophy behind Finaves, the venture capital firm that IESE created in the early 2000s to support its students and that has led 30% of them to start a business at some point in their professional career. Some of the companies in which the business school has invested over the last 22 years include Cooltra, Logisfashion, Busup, Worldsensing, ForceManager, Inbrain Neuroelectrics and Parclick.
IESE has just established its sixth fund, Finaves VI, with which it aims to finance between 25 and 30 seed-stage companies in the next three years. It will do so with amounts ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 euros. The investors behind Finaves VI are family offices, private investors and entrepreneurs. It also has the support of the Official Credit Institute (ICO).
90% of the investment made by Finaves VI will go to Spanish companies, with the expectation that they can generate a great impact in their industry, and there will be no specific focus on any sector. For the analysis of potential investments, the fund will have a committee composed of IESE professors.
The business school's investment history began in 2000 with Finaves I, created by Professor Pedro Nueno. It became the first venture capital firm in Spain dedicated to seed investment. Then came Finaves II (2003), III (2005), IV (2010) and V (2017).
In total, it has made more than 60 direct investments worth 15 million and has co-invested more than 100 million alongside other funds. The companies financed by Finaves have created more than 3,000 direct jobs and generate more than 300 million in annual sales. Beyond the thirty companies that Finaves VI will finance in the coming years, IESE wants to generate 50,000 new jobs by 2030.
