Caprabo expects to complete this year the transformation plan for its entire network of stores, a project that began in 2019 and will involve a global investment of 60 million euros. To reach this figure, the chain plans to renovate 21 more supermarkets this year to adapt them to its new establishment model. The investments made by Caprabo in recent years amount to 100 million if the commissioning of the new central fresh produce warehouse in the ZAL and the opening of new establishments are also included.
According to the group announced today, in the last fiscal year, closed last January, Caprabo reached sales of 743.6 million euros, a figure that represents a growth of 3.6% compared to the previous year. "The new generation stores are showing very positive figures, with an average increase of 10% in sales and a shopping experience very positively valued by our customers," says Edorta Juaristi, general director of Caprabo, in relation to the growth of the turnover.
The executive highlights that the group's new strategic plan, in addition to the transformation of stores and the logistics structure, has incorporated the relaunch of the Caprabo brand, the boost to the Capraboacasa online store, the promotion of local product consumption, the opening of new supermarkets and the adoption of tools that allow "to expand customers' saving capacity". "Caprabo is moving forward with its plan focused on gaining competitiveness and boosting leadership in Catalonia. The supermarket transformation plan is the most important growth lever in recent years," added Juaristi.
In this sense, the virtual supermarket already accounts for nearly 2.6% of Caprabo's sales, and the commercialization of local products exceeded 36 million euros in 2022. According to the company, to combat inflation, it has invested up to 11 million in adjusting the price of more than 3,000 products.
With a trajectory of more than 60 years, Caprabo employs 6,000 people and currently has a network of 301 supermarkets in Catalonia. Since March 2021, it has been 50% owned by the Basque group Eroski and the company EP BidCo, owned by the Czech investor Daniel Křetínský (through EP Corporate Group) and also participated by the Slovak investor Patrik Tkáč.
In 2023, the chain plans to open about 20 new supermarkets, three of them owned and the rest franchised. In the last fiscal year, it also opened about twenty stores, both franchised and owned. In total, between 2021 and 2023 it will have incorporated about 80 points of sale into its network, all of them in Catalonia. The company-owned stores opened in the last year are located in Sitges, Sant Joan Despí, and Barcelona. They are larger than the franchised ones, with an average of 1,500 square meters of commercial space and an investment of 6.6 million.
During this new period of expansion, Caprabo has invested 20 million in its new logistics platform in ZAL Port, in El Prat de Llobregat, where it manages the dispatch of fresh products and has also located its central offices and the preparation of online store orders. In addition, the company also remodeled its central warehouse for dry or packaged products, located in Abrera, with an additional investment of 2.5 million.
