Barcelona's deep tech landscape continues to strengthen, and it does so hand in hand with multiple actors who enrich the ecosystem. Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) also plays its part in this regard: the spin-offs it manages have increased their valuation by 14% globally in 2024, reaching 83 million euros.
The public-private foundation, whose objective is to maximize the impact of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in the city and extend it throughout the year, manages these spin-offs through The Collider, its technology transfer program that promotes the creation of companies from universities and research centers. Currently, the program's portfolio includes 12 active companies that employ 134 people.
Since the program's creation in 2018, The Collider has focused on identifying key projects arising from the university and research fields and then accompanying them in their conversion into companies to ensure their impact on the market and society. Since its launch, the program's companies have raised 35.7 million euros in funding. Of this total, in 2024, companies raised 6.1 million, with 3.4 million from private investment and 2.7 million from public funding.
In addition, apart from its portfolio, the program advised more than 30 projects from universities and research centers nationwide last year. Of these, two were constituted as companies and joined The Collider: YPlasma, from the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (Inta), which has developed a technology that improves the thermal control of electronic devices with plasma, and Nema Health, which emerged from the University of Lleida and specializes in personalized immunotherapy to treat cancer.
Through its work with initiatives like these, The Collider highlights "the capacity that deep tech spin-offs have to generate innovations based on cutting-edge technologies and provide answers to society's most complex challenges," according to the head of the foundation's Tech Transfer area, Jordi Arrufí.
To continue strengthening the foundation's work in this area, MWCapital plans to give new impetus to the program through collaboration agreements with various organizations and institutions that will allow it to expand its reach. With this purpose, it aims to strengthen The Collider's presence at the state level, as well as increase its capacity to attract and accompany new initiatives in their transmission to the market, always with one objective: to promote disruptive innovations that foster digital transformation, talent, and the use of technology for the benefit of society.
