The MNAC leaves the pandemic behind and surpasses 2019 visitor numbers

Its neighbor, the CaixaForum, attracts more than half a million users

Montjuïc is warming up for the transformation it will undergo in the coming years while adding new visitors. Without disparaging all the culés who have been frequenting it for some years, the main tenant of the mountain, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), closed 2024 with more than 860,000 visitors, thus leaving the pandemic behind and surpassing the figures of 2019.

A few months before knowing the final project to expand the MNAC, the museum has reviewed a year in which visitors have grown by 44% compared to the previous one. In the past year, temporary exhibitions such as Suzanne Valadon. A Modern Epic (1940-1966), with some 80,700 visitors, and The Lost Mirror. Jews and Converts during the Middle Ages, with more than 101,000 visitors, stood out.

Almost 60% of visitors to the MNAC are international, with a significant proportion coming from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. The remaining 40% are local, mainly from Barcelona and Catalonia.

Very close to the MNAC, in the lower part of Montjuïc, the CaixaForum attracted more than half a million visitors, becoming the third most visited of the cultural facilities that Fundación La Caixa has spread throughout Spain. Venerated and Feared. Female Power in Art and Beliefs has been the most popular exhibition at the Barcelona venue, with 68,700 visitors. It was closely followed by Alice's Worlds. Dreaming in Wonderland, with almost 67,000 visitors. Premiered in mid-October, it can be seen until February 16.

Despite CaixaForum Barcelona's third position, Fundación La Caixa's network of centers is led by its other facility in the city, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum, with 1.18 million visitors. The exhibition Dinosaurs of Patagonia has been the most visited, with almost 432,000 visitors during 2024 and a total of 617,000 accumulated visitors since its inauguration at the end of 2023, followed by MateMiFaSol. A Sound Journey from Chaos to Cosmos, which has hosted more than 353,000 visitors to date.
