Intimate classical music concerts in the Hivernacle of Ciutadella. This is the proposal from the Liceu, which is celebrating the second edition of chamber concerts in this historic space, after the reopening of the Hivernacle in December 2023. The concert series, which will take place on the weekend of March 22 and 23 and is supported by the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (Icub), aims to bring classical music closer and make it more accessible, and to give visibility to chamber ensembles born within the Liceu's symphony orchestra and choir.
Designed in small formats and short programs, with a capacity of 100 people, they will offer a taste of classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach, but will also rediscover lesser-known figures such as Ernst von Dohnányi or Emmanuel Chabrier.
The inaugural concert, on Saturday, March 22 in the morning with Trío Cenit, will rediscover the figure of Ernst von Dohnányi, composer of the Serenade Op. 10, one of the most celebrated works in the string trio repertoire. In addition to being a composer, Dohnányi was also a prominent conductor and pianist, especially recognized for his interpretations of Beethoven, the other great protagonist of this first concert in the Hivernacle. On Saturday afternoon, it will be the turn of Bach in Motion Ensemble, a group that will explore the dialogue between Bach and Pergolesi to illustrate the technical complexity of Bach's counterpoint, as well as the profound spiritual reflection on human suffering by this German composer.
On Sunday morning, the Hivernacle will once again be filled with classical music, with the voices and instruments of the Cantorum Bassonum Ensemble, an unusual formation that unites the versatility of the bassoon and the power of the voice in chamber music. With works by various composers, such as Emmanuel Chabrier, the concert presents a sound journey that explores deep emotions through compositions of different musical styles, from romanticism to contemporary.
The string sextet Mond Ensemble will be in charge of closing this new edition of concerts at the Hivernacle. Classicism will be the protagonist of the first part of the session, with Mozart and his Divertimento for string trio, which will give way to Arnold Schönberg and his daring piece Transfigured Night, a work with a great emotional charge that transmits the pure and unconditional love the composer feels after meeting his future wife.
The concerts are part of the Constel·lacions program, conceived by the musical director of the Liceu, Josep Pons, who will also offer two concerts in the Foyer of the Liceu on May 11 and 29. Tickets for the concerts in the Ciutadella are priced at five euros, with the idea of offering classical music at popular prices.
