New decisive step for the market arrival of the first COVID vaccine developed in Spain. The pharmaceutical company Hipra has signed a framework contract with the European Commission's Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority to sell up to 250 million doses, thus completing the current portfolio of vaccines provided by AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Janssen, BioNtech-Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax, and Valneva.
According to Brussels, this centralized purchase of Hipra vaccines will allow fourteen Member States to be supplied "as soon as the vaccine has received a positive evaluation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA)." "Given the increase in COVID-19 infections in Europe, we must ensure maximum preparedness for the autumn and winter months," highlighted the European Union Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides.
According to the Commissioner, "Hipra's vaccine adds one more option" and will contribute to "increasing vaccination and booster doses in the coming months." The Nogareda family's pharmaceutical company already explained last week that it expects to be part of the vaccination campaign this autumn and that they hope EMA authorization will arrive in a matter "of months."
The European Commission has indicated that thanks to the framework contract now signed, when the vaccine receives the green light from the EMA, it will immediately be available for use in the different European countries. According to Brussels, it is a bivalent recombinant protein vaccine indicated as a booster dose in previously immunized people aged 16 or older and can be stored at a temperature between 2 and 8 °C, which facilitates its distribution.
