The Estadi Olímpic will host a 'hub' to promote 'sportech'

The Barcelona City Council is working on a new project to revitalize this area of the city, which has not quite found its role after its Olympic prominence

The splendor of the Estadi Olímpic, with the cauldron illuminating everyone during the Olympic Games, has been fading with the passage of time. The icon of 1992 Barcelona has never quite found its role in the city, especially after Espanyol stopped playing there and the attempt to revitalize it through a sports theme park failed. Beyond the Festa dels Súpers and concerts, the Estadi Olímpic is usually empty.

Now, the Barcelona City Council wants to give it a new opportunity and turn it into a hub to promote sportech, according to the specialized publication 2Playbook. The Estadi Olímpic would thus join the long list of hubs that are being promoted in Barcelona, which aspire to position the city on the international map of innovation and consolidate its technological leadership.

The new hub in the Estadi Olímpic will serve to develop sports-related technologies from Barcelona, attracting talent and capital. The council plans to present this project to apply for European funds, in line with the approach of the other hubs that have been announced recently and that rely on the arrival of these aids to be able to promote them.

The innovation nodes that are being proposed are based on the success of Pier 01 of Barcelona Tech City, a space that has hosted emerging technology companies since 2016 and promotes their growth. The association aspires to create an urban campus in the Catalan capital, which will be made up of different hubs specialized in specific topics such as fintech, mobility or sports, as explained by its president, Miquel Martí, in an interview in The New Barcelona Post.
