In the neighborhoods of Gràcia, El Born, Poblenou, and even Eixample, various stores and initiatives aimed at attracting more responsible consumers are emerging, adapting to current trends. Barcelona is a city that seeks to work on sustainability, with a variety of businesses that promote the use of ecological materials, reuse, and local production, although there are always areas for improvement to explore.
In a world where sustainability is a global priority, we often overlook solutions that are most simple and effective. One of them is shopping at traditional food markets, as our parents and grandparents did, which remains one of the most sustainable forms of consumption. However, modern lifestyles and reduced space in homes have led many people to opt for packaged food that can last weeks in the refrigerator.
Buying fresh products daily in markets is not only an act of responsible consumption, but also a way to avoid food waste. According to a FAO study, in Europe each inhabitant wastes an average of 95 kilos of food per year. Globally, 33% of food produced for human consumption is lost or thrown away. It's alarming, isn't it?
Products in markets usually come without unnecessary packaging, which significantly reduces the use of plastics and other non-biodegradable materials. Shopping at local markets not only reduces plastic waste, but also supports local producers and farmers, strengthening the economy and social fabric of our communities.
In the retail sector, our actions can have a very significant impact, and more and more companies are aware and are adopting sustainable policies that we can take note of.
For example, in Barcelona, some retailers in the food sector have started selling bulk products to reduce waste, while some supermarkets are introducing biodegradable packaging and encouraging the use of reusable bags, although the ideal, in my opinion, would be to eliminate plastic bags completely.
Notable examples include Yes Future, on Viladomat street, Barcelona's first plastic-free supermarket, and Gra de Gràcia, a store with three establishments that offers organic, natural, and local bulk products, also free of plastic packaging and with most of its products bearing an organic seal, guaranteeing quality and respect for the environment.
Corporate social responsibility is gaining ground and is becoming a fundamental basis for business managementMun Ferments is another innovative company, from Mataró, that commercializes kombucha with natural and organic ingredients. Its fermentation, which exceeds 30 days, results in a product that barely contains sugar and does not need refrigeration for its preservation or transport, which allows for significant energy and emissions savings.
If we talk about fashion, at Infinit Denim, a store on Bruc street, we find clothes, bags, and accessories made under the principles of the circular economy, using recycled fabric from denim scraps. The most interesting thing is that the entire process, from spinning to manufacturing, is carried out within 400 km of Barcelona, thus reducing the carbon footprint and promoting textile sovereignty.
Corporate social responsibility is gaining ground and becoming a fundamental basis for business management, that's a fact. As retailers, we can take actions to follow this path and get closer to an increasingly critical and committed consumer.
