Superficies de Alimentación, the family business that owns Sorli supermarkets, celebrates its centenary this year. Its history began in 1923 in the Poblenou neighborhood, when Francesc Sorli opened a grocery store on Pere IV street. Today, this small business has become a group that owns a network of 105 supermarkets, 15 cafeterias, three sports centers (Sorli Sport), three gas stations (Sorli Go), two restaurants, and a shopping center in Vilassar de Dalt (Sorli Emocions) which includes a 4-star hotel.

The company closed the 2022 fiscal year with a turnover of 260 million euros, up 2.5%, and coinciding with its centenary, it wants to begin a new phase of expansion that will require an investment of 30 million. Of that figure, 18 million will be allocated to the construction of a new logistics warehouse in Granollers and the remaining 12 million to the opening of seven more establishments: five supermarkets and two gyms.

The new warehouse will allow the logistics area to increase from 14,000 square meters to 25,000 square meters, will involve the hiring of 40 people and will be used for the dispatch of mass consumption or high rotation products and refrigerated and meat items. Sorli's current logistics structure integrates four distribution centers: two located in Mercabarna (one for fruit and one for fish), one in Terrassa (for frozen products) and one in Montmeló, where it now concentrates the storage of dry or packaged and refrigerated products.

The five new supermarkets will be located in the regions of Vallès and Maresme, while the new Sorli Sport sports centers will be built in Sant Vicenç de Montalt (Maresme) and in the city of Badalona, as announced this Tuesday by the group's president, Anna Sorli, and the general director, Josep Figueras.

Both executives recalled that this new investment phase comes after Sorli has completed a six-year period in which it has remodeled and modernized all its supermarkets, with a cumulative investment of 70 million that has been financed with its own funds. "The company was very healthy, which allowed us in 2016 to face the investment with great solvency," says Figueras, who rules out the entry of a partner or an investment fund into the family group, although he does not close the door to future acquisitions if new opportunities arise. "We must be prepared, financially there is no problem," highlights the general director, reports ACN.

With a staff of almost 2,000 workers ---90% with permanent contracts--, Sorli obtains 90% of its income from supermarkets, while gas stations generate between 3% and 4% of the business, and the rest comes from the gym area and the Sorli Emocions division. In parallel, its online supermarket, Sorliclic, generates 2% of the turnover.
