Seat and the Government stage the shared commitment to produce electric cars in Martorell

Volkswagen President Herbert Diess assures there is a "historic opportunity" for the Barcelona-based automotive group to lead the transformation towards electric vehicles in Spain

Seat wants to electrify mobility in Spain, with the production of electric cars in Martorell, but the carmaker cannot do it alone and needs the Government to invest to promote this transformation of the industry. This is the message that the president of Seat, Wayne Griffiths, has been repeating for monthsand has once again defended this Friday before the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and Felipe VI, in an institutional visit on the occasion of the company's 70th birthday, which no one from the Govern attended. "70 years ago we put this country on wheels. Now, our goal is to put Spain on electric wheels. For this to be a reality, all parties agree that Spain must develop and guarantee a wide charging infrastructure throughout the territory and stimulate demand through incentives. Spain must get on the electrification train," Griffiths explained. He said it accompanied by the president of the Volkswagen group, Herbert Diess, which has also been forceful: "Spain has great potential to become ahubof e-mobility in Europe. Until now, there is almost no investment in Spain in electrification and, in fact, most electric cars are being produced in Germany."

The response of Pedro Sánchez's executive to Seat's demands came the day before this meeting in Martorell, with the announcement by the Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto, of the construction of the first battery factory in Spain, with the help of European funds. "The Volkswagen Group, Seat and the Spanish Government share a single vision: the sustainable transformation of the automotive industry," Diess said. In this sense, the president of the Volkswagen Group has highlighted "the historic opportunity" that this conjunction represents, working "hand in hand" to transform Europe's second vehicle production industry. And, in case there was any doubt, Diess added: "We plan to produce electric cars here, in Martorell."

For its part, the king has also celebrated the public support of the Government to promote a battery factory, "an unbeatable sign" of the commitment to guarantee electrification in Spainto manufacturers like Seat, which plans to invest 5 billion euros in new models until 2025. "Spain and all its institutions will be there. We have unique conditions to lead the transition towards the manufacturing of clean vehicles," stated Felipe VI, who guaranteed his absolute support for this goal. Although the visit to Martorell, which was also attended by Maroto and the Government delegate in Catalonia, Teresa Cunillera, did not serve to clarify which electric vehicles will be produced from this plant or when this manufacturing will begin, it did allow to stage the good harmony between the central executive and the German group to achieve this shared objective.A notable absence has occurred in the visit and institutional support to Seat, that of the Generalitat, which has not sent any representative.
