Sanofi officially opened its new headquarters in Barcelona this Monday. Located in the Torre Meridian building, it covers the 800 employees that the biopharmaceutical company has in the Catalan capital, half of them ---about 400--- within the global digital hub that leads Sanofi's innovation and transformation internationally. Until now, Sanofi Spain's corporate offices were in Torre Diagonal Mar, while the Meridian building, located next to Avenida Meridiana, in the Can Dragó area, only housed the hub, opened in 2016.
"The inauguration of the new headquarters for Spain is another example of our commitment to the country and reflects what Sanofi is: a modern, digital company, respectful of the environment and adapted to new ways of working," said the new general manager of Sanofi in the Spanish market, Raquel Tapia. The French biopharmaceutical company has invested 49.4 million euros in R&D in the last year in Spain, with an accumulated 206 million in five years.
"Undoubtedly, the new headquarters will help us achieve our goal: to use the power of science to improve people's lives, especially those suffering from an illness," Tapia reflected aloud. Sanofi's global CEO, Paul Hudson, confirmed that the brand-new offices in Barcelona confirm the commitment "to innovation and to the Catalan capital." The multinational maintains an office in Madrid and the production center in Riells i Viabrea (Girona), with 300 employees, which absorbs 5% of the company's global manufacturing volume and in which 41 million have been invested in the last four years. 94% of the production (72 million units) is destined for export to more than 120 countries.
"Sanofi is a historical partner of our country since it landed in Riells 50 years ago, but especially at this moment," acknowledged the Minister of Business of the Generalitat, Roger Torrent, reports ACN. "What we have been able to learn in more detail today is an example of this meeting point between new technologies and the field of health. Sanofi is a clear case of what we want to build in Catalonia, Barcelona and Europe," said Torrent, who recalled that the life sciences sector in Catalonia already generates 9% of GDP and employs some 250,000 people. "It has a primary weight in our economy and is nourished by productive relationships with reference hospitals and leading research centers," said the head of Business and Labor.
Three work zones and 100 meeting rooms
Sanofi's new offices occupy six of the 18 floors of Torre Meridian, have been designed with a hybrid work model and offer employees three possible environments: a common and noisy area where they can talk openly and receive calls, another where the noise is more moderate and a third silent one similar to a library for better concentration. It also has more than one hundred meeting rooms and five community hubs for group meetings. In parallel, Sanofi's facilities also comply with the environment, since 100% of the energy they use comes from renewable energies and artificial lighting is through LED technology.
Even the carpet on the floor is made of recycled fiber from fishing nets recovered from beaches and seabeds. Thanks to these energy efficiency standards, the biopharmaceutical company estimates that it will be able to reduce its carbon footprint by 91 metric tons of CO₂ annually. Finally, with the move to the new headquarters, the offices offer workers a series of new services such as medical consultation, physiotherapy and nutritionist, apart from in-person yoga and/or pilates classes and agreements with sports centers to encourage physical activity.
