In the global race for vaccines, a Catalan company is also competing. Ruti Immune, a spin-off of the Badalona-based biotechnology company Archivel Farma, aspires to become the first company in the world to register a vaccine prepared to combat multiple infections, not just SARS-COV-2. Through trained immunity, this vaccine aims to reduce the incidence of covid-19 and its severity, as well as decrease the severity of other respiratory infections. It can also serve as a booster for other vaccines, such as Pfizer, Moderna, or Oxford.

To finance the research and development of the vaccine, Ruti Immune has just closed a round of 1.6 million euros on Capital Cell, a collective investment platform, with the participation of more than 800 investors. The resources will be used to explore whether the trained immunity provoked by the vaccine is effective in preventing SARS-COV-2 infection or mitigating its effects. Several preclinical studies and clinical trials will be carried out. The funding obtained will also be used to increase the vaccine's production capacity from the current two million units per year and thus prepare for its global deployment starting in 2022.

The Ruti vaccine began to be administered in late November to healthcare workers in Argentine hospitals, in a study approved in October by the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT). In this country, the vaccine is expected to be administered to more than 360 employees from different centers, such as the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires.
