Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of Redeia, has started this week the works for the expansion and transformation of the Abrera substation, close to the Seat factory and all the auxiliary industry around it. With an investment of 8 million euros, the infrastructure is thus preparing to serve the electrification process that the Martorell car manufacturer is following, with an investment of 5,000 million euros by 2025 to adapt the plant to the new production.

The actions to be carried out consist of the renovation and expansion of the existing substation, moving from an outdoor one to a covered one, with eight new positions and two more in reserve. According to the company, responsible for the transport and operation of the electricity system in Spain, the installation will be more compact and with a lower visual impact, and will have a configuration that will provide more reliability and security of supply to a point of high industrial demand.

The works are expected to last 12 months, not counting the testing period. The project is included in Red Eléctrica's current 2021-2026 planning, with a planned investment of 400 million euros for Catalonia. The bulk of the outlay is concentrated in Tarragona and its petrochemical industry, with the construction of two new substations. It also includes the substation that has to serve the electrification of the Port of Barcelona's docks.
