Sustainability gains importance at the Port de Barcelona also through its buildings. The Port Authority has completed the comprehensive rehabilitation of ASTA, one of its historic headquarters, after an investment of 20.8 million euros that has transformed it into a more efficient building, prepared for the challenges of future logistics.
The renovation has preserved the original structure of the building but has completely transformed its facade, interior spaces, and facilities. With nearly 14,000 square meters, ASTA will continue to host Port Authority services, such as the Archive and the departments of Heritage, Conservation, and Navigation Aids, while also providing flexible spaces for new activities linked to the logistics sector. The complex also integrates the headquarters of the Port Police, inaugurated two years ago in an annex building of more than 2,000 square meters.
The works, which began in September 2021, involved an investment of 20.8 million euros, partially financed with European FEDER funds within the framework of the Plan for the reduction of energy consumption in the General State Administration.
Air conditioning with LNG cold
Beyond the architectural renovation, the project incorporates one of the most innovative energy solutions promoted so far by the Port de Barcelona. ASTA will be air-conditioned through the cold and heat network being deployed by Ecoenergies Barcelona, powered by the residual cold generated during the regasification process of liquefied natural gas (LNG) that arrives at the Enagás terminal, at the Energy dock.
This is a circular economy model that takes advantage of energy that is usually dissipated to serve both buildings and industrial facilities. When the network is fully deployed, it is estimated that it will prevent the emission of 32,000 tons of CO₂ annually.

In addition, the building will operate entirely with 100% renewable electricity, like the rest of the Port Authority's properties, and will also use this network for the production of domestic hot water, further reducing its environmental footprint.
The rehabilitation of the ASTA is part of the Port of Barcelona's strategy to modernize its infrastructures and move towards a more sustainable model. In recent years, the Port Authority has accelerated projects such as the electrification of the docks, the generation and distribution of renewable energies, and the decarbonization of port activity, with the aim of reducing emissions and consolidating the enclosure as one of the main logistics hubs in the Mediterranean.
