The Rambla de Mar, located between Marina Vela and the Llevant dock, will be urbanized and more than 10,000 square meters will be made available for public use. With an investment of around 2.4 million euros, a new promenade and a viewpoint open to the public will be built, with elements that will explain the history of the Port of Barcelona. The budget will be complemented with almost one million euros more in maintenance costs. It is expected that everything will be ready by 2024, with an eye on the celebration of the America's Cup, thinking of this new area as a viewpoint from which to watch the boats compete.
To make all this possible, the Port's board of directors has approved extending the concession of the Bocana Nord awarded to Marina Vela, which will now end in 2049. The agreement implies that the company that manages the marina, Port Med Barcelona, will be responsible for the urbanization of the Rambla de Mar.
In this way, the Marina Vela concession, which until now included the dock and the spaces reserved for the marina's buildings and services, as well as part of the extension of the Rosa dels Vents square, will add the future Rambla de Mar up to the viewpoint of the Bocana Nord passage. It will be here where a new building will be located that can house a restaurant.
Likewise, the Rambla de Mar project contemplates including elements in the new promenade that explain the past of the Port of Barcelona. Among others, there will be a giant model that will show the shape of the infrastructure in the mid-20th century ---and which will also serve as a bench for visitors who come there---. Along with this element, marks will be placed on the ground indicating the points where the old breakwater of the port was located.
The furniture of the new promenade will complement this informative objective, with period reproductions with sculptural chairs and tables. A walkway will also be installed that will go out to sea on the viewpoint's stands, simulating those that fishermen built in the past. To round it off, at the end of the new promenade, a structure will be installed that will serve to indicate 16 cardinal points that will symbolize the international ports with which Barcelona has maintained a closer relationship.
