From the bustling streets of Barcelona to the skyscrapers of New York, two worlds unfold, shining with their own light and sharing a connection in terms of fashion and gastronomy. However, both cities have valuable lessons to offer and learn from each other, especially in the world of retail.
Barcelona for me is synonymous with pride, tradition, and avant-garde. The city is admired for its cultural richness, with emblematic places like the Sagrada Familia, artisan product shops, and traditional markets. The Boqueria Market, for example, was chosen the best market in the world by the Global Tastemakers Awards of the publication Food & Wine in May of this year, surpassing giants like Tokyo's Tsukiji Outer Market and London's Borough Market. This is not the first time it has received international recognition.
In Barcelona, we find local stores that are a source of pride. Establishments with soul like the multi-brand luxury clothing store Santa Eulalia, fashion brands born online like Nude Project, Mietis, and Thinking Mu. Or emblematic jewelers like Tous and new-era ones like PdPaola. In addition, food stores such as Chocolates Simón Coll, which opened a store in the heart of the Eixample in December, and innovative concepts such as Ametller Origen, a Catalan company that has been raising awareness about the importance of good nutrition for more than two decades.
Getting lost in neighborhoods like Poble Nou, the Gothic Quarter, Ciutat Vella, and the Eixample reveals a city rich in culture, fashion, and gastronomy. Barcelona is a city that exports from home and has the potential to be a global reference if it comes to believe in itself.
New York is for me innovation and greatness. In the city, there are excellent shops, such as Murray's Cheese in Long Island, where I always go to buy when I'm traveling in the city. However, let's be honest: what predominates are the large international chains. And romanticism. Magnolia Bakery, for example, has become the city's most famous bakery after appearing in an episode of Sex and the City.
What I admire about New York is its capacity to think big. The city's energy makes you feel that anything is possible and its projects are conceived on a grand scale, as if there were no limits.Barcelona has everything necessary to reach new heights, it just needs to boost the city. The big difference I see between New York and Barcelona is that in New York, perhaps they don't have everything, but they do believe it. In Barcelona, we have a Passeig de Gràcia that, although it may not be Fifth Avenue, along with more than seventy vibrant neighborhoods, sea, mountains, and exceptional shops, can position itself as a global benchmark.
Barcelona has it all; it simply needs to boost the feeling of pride, its economic focus, and its identity as a city.Adopting a global mindset and exporting from home is crucial. Mango is an example of a brand with roots in Barcelona that has conquered the world, even Fifth Avenue. Barcelona needs this global vision to avoid isolating itself, showing the world its richness and reaching new heights.
Every time I return home after a trip to New York, I realize how wonderful Barcelona is and how, with the right strategies, it can become the best city in the world. Yes, I said it right: the best city in the world.
Barcelona has it all; it simply needs to boost its sense of pride, its economic focus, and its identity as a city. With this mindset, it can become unstoppable.
A benchmark worldwide.
