Asabys Partners launches its second investment fund, Sabadell Asabys Health Innovation Investments II (SAHII II), with which it has just raised 100 million euros with the leadership of Banco Sabadell, although the goal is to increase the size of the new vehicle to 200 million this year. The management company chaired by Josep Ll. Sanfeliu has just announced its entry into the capital of the Barcelona-based startup DeepUll, specialized in medical technology for the early identification of sepsis and other acute infections.

Asabys has co-led with the Catalan family multinational Werfen an investment round in DeepUll of 17 million euros and in which Innvierte (CDTI), Kurma Partners, Alta Life sciences, UI Investissement (advised by Mérieux Equity Partners) and Axis Participaciones Empresariales have also participated.

The Series B round was initially closed for an amount of 13 million last October, but now, once the SAHII II fund has been launched, Asabys has joined the company's shareholding and has also entered its board of directors, where it will be represented by Sanfeliu himself. "DeepUll is the perfect example of an innovative company in the field of diagnostics, led by an exceptional team and that uses very advanced technologies to solve a clear medical need in the area of infectious diseases," highlights the co-founder of Asabys.

DeepUll was founded in 2020 by two serial entrepreneurs, Jordi Carrera and Rafel Bru, to create affordable early sepsis diagnostic solutions that do not require cultures. Carrera and Bru were the founders of Stat-Dx, a startup that was sold to Qiagen in 2018. According to Asabys, the resources from the investment round will be allocated to the development of a "first-in-class sepsis identification platform, with the aim of drastically improving patient outcomes and reducing the unnecessary use of antimicrobials." With the extra funding provided by the management company, the "path to market," that is, the start of commercialization of the product currently under development, will also be accelerated.

It is a desktop device that can be used both in a laboratory, as well as in a hospital emergency area or in the ICU and that is designed to detect more than 250 different pathogens and 15 resistance genes in one hour, from 10mL of blood. According to DeepUll, the product will generate results to identify infections in about eight hours and without the need for a positive blood culture.

"We are delighted to have Asabys as a new investor in DeepUll. Asabys' experience and conviction for innovation and medical technologies bring great value to the company, supporting our growth and helping us to achieve relevant milestones for the ultimate benefit of patients," added Jordi Carrera, director and co-founder of DeepUll.
