A new footwear brand and seller of clothing and sports equipment is preparing to land in Portal de l'Àngel, Barcelona's main commercial artery. It is the JD Sports chain, owned by the British group JD Group, which has rented the premises previously occupied by the old Disney store in the city, on the corner with Canuda street.
The establishment will also occupy the space left by an H&M store, totaling a surface area of 2,500 square meters at number 9 Portal de l'Àngel, as reported by Expansión. The JD Sports megastore will be the largest in Spain and Portugal and will employ around 120 people.
Of the 2,500 square meters of commercial space, 2,000 meters will be allocated to the different departments of JD Sports, while the other 500 square meters will be for Size?, a chain from the same group specializing in limited editions of footwear and sportswear that will open its first establishment in the city and the second in the Spanish market in the premises.
"JD Sports continues with the strategy of opening flagship stores in the main cities of Spain and Europe, where we want to continue being the reference brand in terms of sports fashion," Gabriel Bocci, expansion director of the firm, explained to the economic newspaper. "Portal de l'Àngel is the street most akin to JD's customer," he pointed out.
In 2021, the JD Sports group had 2,600 stores in 20 countries, of which 853 belonged to the JD chain and 33 to Size?. Other brands of the multinational are Footpatrol, Sprinter, Chausport, and Sport Zone. In June 2021, the British listed company bought the Catalan e-commerce company Deporvillage, in an operation valued at 140 million euros. Initially, 80% of the capital was acquired, and last October an additional 18% was purchased, bringing control to 98% of the company. The remaining 2% remains in the hands of the founders: Xavier Pladellorens and Ángel Corcuera.
