The most representative economic agents of the economic activity and the productive fabric of the city and of Catalonia as a whole have decided to call a unitary act to demand the expansion of the Barcelona Airport proposed by Aena. It will be held next Wednesday, June 2, at Esade and will feature the participation of former minister Andreu Mas-Colell.
Foment del Treball, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Barcelona Tech City, the Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the Cercle d'Economia, the Círculo Ecuestre, the RACC and the Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya (UFEC) are some of the thirty entities that will participate in this call, which was decided at a meeting at the employers' association headquarters.
The reform planned for the airport consists of building a new satellite terminal and extending one of the parallel runways by 500 meters, affecting the protected natural area of La Ricarda. The estimated investment is 1,700 million euros for the period 2022-2026.
The lack of agreement between the different administrations on the expansion has led Foment del Treball to urgently request a major institutional agreement to carry it out. For its president, Josep Sánchez Llibre, this project "is one of the levers for the economic recovery" of Catalonia and, therefore, "we cannot afford the luxury of losing the great opportunity that putting Barcelona back in the world can represent."
