Turisme de Barcelona advances in the creation of its data 'hub'

The City Council, the Generalitat, the Chamber of Commerce, Vueling, Telefónica, FC Barcelona, Hospital Clínic and Racc join this consortium initiative to better understand the city's visitors and adapt to their interests

The data that is constantly generated has become one of the most valuable pieces of information for any type of business, although it remains to be resolved how to take advantage of it while respecting citizens' privacy. Companies want to know it to understand how their customers behave, both current and future, and what proposals will convince them most. In this context, the city's tourism sector does not want to be left behind. Turisme de Barcelona has been working for months to promote a hub that analyzes all the data generated by tourists, as The New Barcelona Post reported.

It remains to be seen what this data center will ultimately be like, but Turisme de Barcelona has already given it a name ---Amazing Barcelona--- and also a face to its main members. For now, the Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Vueling, Telefónica, FC Barcelona, Hospital Clínic, and RACC have joined its initiative. Now, they will have to define the business plan for this center, which they want to receive support from European funds.

This future public-private platform will manage data from tourists arriving through the different institutions, companies, and entities involved, with the aim of interacting better with them, from when they decide to visit the Catalan capital until they return home. The information collected will be made accessible to agents in the tourism industry, who currently have no way to evaluate their decisions from such a global perspective, and to the tourists themselves, who will have access to the necessary information to enrich their stay and personalize it according to their interests and tastes. It will also serve to make this sector more sustainable, better managing the flow of people in tourist areas and reducing the avalanches they cause.
