Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has selected Iberdrola for the supply of renewable hydrogen to its fleet of urban buses, with the aim of moving towards a new, less polluting mobility. The company will provide it from a plant in the Zona Franca, which will be built in 2021.

The hydrogen plant will be located on a 5,000 square meter plot, which will be leased to the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB). It will be used by TMB buses with this technology and also by other fleets and industries in the industrial park that adopt it, becoming the first public plant of its kind in Spain.

According to the tender result, TMB will pay Iberdrola for this supply an amount of approximately 14.3 million euros over the ten years of the contract. Specifically, the company will supply renewable hydrogen, produced by electrolysis.

In parallel, TMB has acquired eight latest-generation hydrogen fuel cell buses, which will arrive in Barcelona in November 2021, with the forecast that they will enter service in early 2022.

This is what TMB's future hydrogen buses, which are starting to be manufactured, will look like.
