Scopely, a US multinational in the mobile video game sector that has been established in Spain for years, is acquiring the Barcelona-based video game development studio Omnidrone, in which it first invested in 2018, and which has about 120 employees in its offices on Vía Layetana in the Catalan capital.
California-based Scopely strengthens its position in the Spanish market with this acquisition, where it already has a team of 700 employees located in the group's multiple offices in Barcelona and Seville, totaling more than 8,000 square meters. Its expansion has been mainly inorganic, incorporating local companies.
In Barcelona, it already had the studio Scopely Parallel, which creates and operates live games Yahtzee With Buddies and Scrabble GO, and a team from GSN Games —a division of Game Show Network, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment—, which works on games and technology. Meanwhile, the Scopely Genjoy studio is located in Seville, working on several casual game projects.
Omnidrone specializes in highly social midcore gaming experiences. Its co-founder and CEO Gerard Fernández explains that "as a partner of Scopely, Omnidrone has been impressed by the company's growth and success in achieving global scale while setting new standards in the genres for gamers." "Scopely is a collaborative home that houses great talent in game creation," he adds.
In the company's new structure, Fernández will continue to oversee the Omnidrone studio within Scopely's MMO strategy division. This multinational encompasses multiple specialties such as engineering, analytical and data analysis, creative services, and customer support, among others. With the announcement of the acquisition of Omnidrone, it has also communicated that it plans to hire a hundred more professionals in Spain, such as 3D artists and animators, technical artists, Playgami platform engineers, or development engineers.
Before Omnidrone, Gerard Fernández co-founded Microjocs, one of the first companies to create and distribute mobile games in Spain. Microjocs was acquired by Digital Chocolate and then by Ubisoft.
