The technology and knowledge transfer office of the University of Barcelona (UB), the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, managed a total of 564 projects worth 24.31 million euros in 2021, in addition to licensing 17 technologies and creating two new spin-offs. Next year will mark 40 years since the birth of this foundation, created with the aim of bringing the results of research generated on campus to the market, one of the pending subjects of the Catalan university system.
There are different ways to bring what is discovered in laboratories to society. It can be done through contract research, but also with the creation of spin-off companies and the commercialization of technologies, materials, and licenses.
In this regard, the UB had almost 2,000 active projects managed by the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, obtained 10.53 million euros in aid, and a total of 670 companies and institutions contracted its research. Likewise, the UB has 132 patents to transfer, and in 2021, 17 license agreements were signed with companies that use technologies developed at the university.
Furthermore, last year ended with the creation of the spin-offs Oniria Therapeutics and Reveal Genomics. The first is a biopharmaceutical company participated by the university itself, as well as by the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) and the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). The startup works to eliminate resistant tumor cells. On the other hand, Reveal Genomics is a biotechnology company founded in 2020, with the participation of the UB since March 2022, along with Hospital Clínic and Hospital Vall d'Hebron. Its objective is to develop innovative diagnostic tests in oncology and it already commercializes a test that allows adjusting the type of breast cancer treatment. In this area, 18 entrepreneurship projects linked to the UB were also advised by the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation. In total, the university has 22 participated companies.
