The Seat plant in El Prat de Llobregat, dedicated to the manufacture of components, was expected to be the most affected by the electrification process in Martorell. With a workforce of 900 employees and an area of 155,000 square meters, it specializes in gearboxes for combustion cars and its production was expected to decrease. However, Seat has managed to attract the manufacturing of five parts for electric cars, taking into account the high qualification of its employees and the good performance of the center, founded in 1979. In this way, its future is secured and its reorientation towards the manufacturing of components for electric vehicles is faced.
With this reconversion plan for the Seat plant in El Prat, Seat indicates that it is taking another step in its intention to turn Spain into an electric mobility hub for Europe. "The awarding of new components reaffirms Seat's and Volkswagen's commitment to employment stability and the search for alternatives that ensure the future of Seat Componentes, as part of the transformation process in which all the group's component plants are immersed," defends Seat's Vice President of Production and Logistics, Markus Haupt.
The new parts will begin to be manufactured starting in 2025. Specifically, at the Seat plant, the differential, the steering knuckle, the battery E-Box, the battery cooling module, and the aluminum for the Small BEV car family, the platform for small electric vehicles, will be produced. Union sources indicate that they are negotiating to get one more part.
For the transformation of the components plant, Seat plans to invest three million euros. The production center in El Prat is one of the three that the automaker has in Spain, along with those in Martorell and the Zona Franca of Barcelona. It is also one of the nine facilities dedicated to the manufacture of transmissions that the Volkswagen group has worldwide. Those in Kassel (Germany), Vrchlabi, Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic), Córdoba (Argentina), Anting, Dalian, Tianjin, and Changchun (China) complete the list.
