The representative organizations of the city's retail sector have agreed to extend opening hours in 2022 and open their doors every Sunday and public holiday during the summer. This consensus has received the support of the municipal government team, which will have to submit it to a vote in the plenary session. Once validated by the City Council, it will be sent to the General Directorate of Commerce of the Generalitat for final approval.
Fundació Barcelona Comerç and Barcelona Oberta are the entities behind this proposal. It is estimated that it will allow the creation of some 3,200 jobs in the commercial sector throughout the city and increase activity by 13%, with a special impact on the center, one of the areas most affected by the covid crisis.
Specifically, the possibility of opening on Sundays and public holidays in all shops in the city from May 1 to September 30, from 12 to 20 hours, has been raised. Currently, only certain areas considered tourist areas could do so between May 5 and 24, and between October 1 and 14, in addition to the ten public holidays on which shops are allowed to open.
