The Olympic Ring of Barcelona, located on Montjuïc mountain, is preparing for a record-breaking year in 2023, with more than 140 events scheduled at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, the Palau Sant Jordi, and the Sant Jordi Club, which could translate into more than 1.4 million visitors. This figure has not been reached in a decade and, if so, will practically double the visitors recorded in 2022.
In total, the public company Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM) has scheduled 116 concerts, 60% more than in 2022. "It will be the first time, in the 30-year history of this facility, that, in a single year, the Olympic Stadium will be filled eight times to host musical performances," explains the company, referring to the concerts that Coldplay (will play four days), Bruce Springsteen (double concert); Harry Styles and The Weekend will offer.
In parallel, the Palau Sant Jordi and the Sant Jordi Club will host renowned national and international artists, such as Robbie Williams, who will perform two days; Elton John, also with a double concert; and the British band The Who, who had not visited Barcelona in seven years. Also noteworthy are the concerts by the Americans Blink-182, who return to the stage after 10 years; Bad Gyal, Lola Indigo, Maroon 5; Quevedo, Joaquín Sabina; the end of Oques Grasses' tour; or La Pegatina, who will celebrate their twentieth anniversary with a special tour.
This 2023 will also see the return to Montjuïc of classic entertainment shows such as Disney on Ice, Cirque du Soleil or Trial Indoor; and new events will be held such as the Barcelona Eurovision Party, which lands for the first time at the Sant Jordi Club to promote its growth.
This strong activity associated with major musical concerts will have to coexist with the fact that the Olympic Stadium will host the matches of FC Barcelona's men's first team in the 2023-2024 season, as Camp Nou will be under construction. "This coexistence will be done by guaranteeing at all times that the Club's activity is compatible with the rest of the cultural, sports and civic uses of the Olympic Ring and the rest of the facilities on Montjuïc mountain," states B:SM.
"In 2023, the Olympic Ring will show its exceptional potential as a venue for major events. The versatility of the Olympic Stadium, the Palau Sant Jordi, the Sant Jordi Club, and the Olympic Esplanade make Barcelona one of the main European centers for culture and entertainment, an international positioning that perfectly coexists with the bond these spaces continue to maintain with the people of Barcelona, who also enjoy them through social and educational activities," said the first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni.
According to B:SM, this strong growth in visitors and concerts will be possible thanks "to investments made in recent years, which have allowed for improved operational efficiency of the facilities and increased the capacity of the Palau Sant Jordi to almost 18,500 people, thus consolidating it as the largest enclosed event venue in Spain, which favors the attraction of major international tours."
