The residents of Barcelona do not know how to manage to stay in Barcelona. If the great appeal of this legislature are the Superblocks and the trams, it is not strange that a good part of the citizenry finds itself orphaned of effective solutions to their problems (which, we can all agree, have nothing to do with Superblocks or trams). Possibly, a numbing order of priorities has been created due to a lack of strength, or capacity, to address the true and growing dramas, which I believe are four: housing prices, salaries, security, and accessibility. I believe it is common sense that the decision on the vote in these upcoming municipal elections revolves around those concepts that, in short, "make me decide (and make it possible for me) to stay in Barcelona." This. And nothing more than this.
Regarding housing prices, it is already known that there are legal changes at the state level, but at the same time, everyone admits that this will not revert in price until immense investments in social housing are promoted (and this no longer depends only on the state). In any case, the policy of pacifying streets and transforming key urban thoroughfares (such as Via Laietana, such as Consell de Cent) into boulevards is sure to increase the price of homes in the area and in the city in general. It is not about being against it, but about knowing if it is a luxury we can afford in the central areas of Barcelona.
In other words: pacifying all the streets surrounding the Sagrada Família or the Barri Gòtic would make much more sense, both for Barcelonians and for visitors, than arbitrarily designating a street in the middle of the Eixample and deciding that we will walk there. Pacification can lead to an undesirable peace of the cemeteries in what is the economic heart of the city, in the center of its social dynamism. Expelling commercial premises, law firms, or doctor's offices due to a lack of comfortable accessibility in the area is a luxury that, as I said, I don't know if we can afford. Ideas that seem good because the concept is beautiful are not always the best ideas in their application. Communists know a lot about this.
Regarding salaries, proposals for minimum wages in the city are already being heard, but it turns out that this is jurisdictionally impossible. It is also true that, whether salaries are 1,200 euros or 3,000 euros, the prices of absolutely everything have become unbearable very suddenly. The formula that could be sought, respecting the current competencies of all, is to make the City Council not contract any company for any service that does not comply with the minimum legal remunerations for all its workers and, incidentally, to give more points to those that exceed certain remuneration brackets for their employees.
The same could be done for those that do not use Catalan with minimum legal normality, instead of bending to the linguistic demands of the Círculo Ecuestre. Although this is another topic, the praxis of incentive is an immense way for the municipality to mold citizen life to a fairer idea and this can also include salaries. In fact, it can include everything that makes Barcelonians not want to flee Barcelona on foot.
The praxis of incentive is an immense way for the municipality to mold citizen life to a fairer idea and this can also include salariesLiving in a city is living in a city, and not in a town or a resort. "Pretend it's a city", dear politicians, and do not try to make Barcelona something it is not and cannot be. Even Cerdà's utopian city had its concessions to reality, to needs, much more than to luxuries. Having security is not a luxury, it is a necessity, as is being able to have a transport network that allows you to offer a city accessible to the rest of the country's citizens. Having quality tourism is a luxury, having citizens who come to work in Barcelona is a necessity. Mutua.
We have, therefore, been distracted by debates that impoverish us both mentally and economically and that only try to beautify our pupils. This month of May is about these things, and only about this should we listen to those who will make so many proposals. Exclusively this: "How do you plan to make me stay?".
