Summer in Barcelona has some plans that are already classics. With the arrival of the heat, Barcelonians eagerly await cultural events such as the Grec Festival, music festivals like Sónar or Cruïlla and, of course, open-air cinema. And what would our summer nights be without those get-togethers with your loved ones, a cool drink in hand, and a good movie on the big screen?
This year, our city once again offers open-air cinema series, ideal for the whole family: Sala Montjuïc, Cinema a la Platja, Gandules at the CCCB, and other cinephile gatherings in civic centers, shopping centers, and even on the rooftop of a luxury hotel in the city.
Sala Montjuïc: the (already) classic open-air cinema in Montjuïc
If there's a classic of summer nights in our city, it's Sala Montjuïc. This open-air cinema series is once again held in the moat of Montjuïc Castle, offering a plan that combines its famous rental sun loungers, a grass "carpet" to spread the picnic blanket, and live concerts before the screening. The 2026 program once again mixes current blockbusters with cult films such as, for example, Sirat, One Battle After Another, Three Goodbyes, among many other titles.
Cinema lliure a la Platja
But if you're more of a beach person than a mountain person, nothing beats going down to Barceloneta, specifically, Sant Sebastià Beach, to enjoy Cinema Lliure a la Platja. This series offers a free and open-access program, with great titles like The Light of Ahisa, Pilgrimage or The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo. The screenings take place every Thursday in July and begin at sunset, around 9:30 p.m. Few sensations surpass watching a good movie with the sound of the waves in the background and the Mediterranean breeze!
Gandules 2026, open-air cinema at the CCCB
The Pati de les Dones of the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona) will once again be filled with hammocks from July 28 to August 13, 2026, with its Gandules cycle. This year, film critic Desirée de Fez curates an edition that directly dialogues with the exhibition The Cult of Beauty. The cycle focuses on films that deal with the obsession with perfection, eternal youth, and aesthetic pressure with films such as Helter Skelter by Mika Ninagawa, Eyes Without a Face (Les yeux sans visage) by Georges Franju, The Substance (The Substance) by Coralie Fargeat, or The Fly (The Fly) by David Cronenberg.
Open air roof-top cinema at El Palace de Barcelona
The Palace hotel offers an exclusive and sophisticated evening with its Open air roof-top cinema, an open-air film series that will run until July 31, 2026. Its Rooftop Garden installs a giant screen and has very limited seating (only 20 reclining hammocks and 4 sun loungers) to ensure an intimate atmosphere. The experience includes a reserved seat, a welcome St. Germain Spritz cocktail, and freshly made popcorn. Its program from Wednesday to Saturday, projected in original version with subtitles, features timeless classics and current hits such as Grease, Bridget Jones's Diary, Casablanca, La La Land, among others.
Open-air cinema at Illa Diagonal
Behind the L'Illa Diagonal shopping center are the Jardins de Sant Joan de Déu which, on Thursday nights in July, become an open-air cinema. Starting at 10:00 PM, this series offers a very varied program that includes titles such as My Friend Eva, Hamnet or Calle Málaga. It's the perfect plan to break the week's routine: you can take advantage of the afternoon to do some shopping, have a quick dinner in the shopping center's gastronomic area, and then cross to the gardens to relax on the grass with a good movie. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, ideal for enjoying with friends or as a couple.
Nits de Pel·lícula in the Parc del Centre de Poblenou
El Poblenou recovers the Nits de Pel·lícula (Film Nights) in the Parc del Centre del Poblenou with a proposal that goes beyond the screening: before each film, families and groups of friends can share an outdoor dinner in the park itself (by previously collecting a free ticket at the Casal de Barri Bac de Roda-Poblenou). The space has a zone with free chairs and a bar service to liven up its outdoor cinema nights. This year's program is Olivia i el terratrèmol invisible (Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake), Frontera (Border) and La cena (The Dinner).
Pantalla Barcelona, Barcelona's largest outdoor cinema series
The civic centers of Barcelona once again present the largest cinema series in the entire city: Pantalla Barcelona. This initiative offers completely free screenings without the need for prior reservation, distributed across twelve screens in the city's ten districts. The events take place in spaces such as Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, Plaça del Rei, the Vil·la Florida gardens, or the Aqueduct Park and run until July 23.
This year's lineup strongly features local talent with titles such as L'àvia i el foraster by Sergi Miralles, La furgo by Eloy Calvo, Los Tortuga by Belén Funes, or Molt lluny by Gerard Oms, among others.
Finestrelles Shopping Centre and its family outdoor cinema series
The Finestrelles Shopping Centre, in Esplugues de Llobregat, offers a fun plan suitable for all audiences. On the shopping center's restaurant floor, a completely free outdoor cinema series is held throughout the summer with screenings every Saturday night. Until September 12, you can enjoy its program, which is very focused on family and adventure cinema, with titles such as Pitufos (Smurfs), Blancanieves (Snow White), Los Tipos Malos (The Bad Guys), etc.
Outdoor cinema at the Canòdrom
The Canòdrom (Ateneu d'Innovació Digital i Democràtica) space returns this summer with its Cicle de Cinema a la Fresca 2026 (Outdoor Cinema Series 2026). Every Friday in July starting at 8:30 p.m., the square and stands of the space open to host free screenings (no prior registration required) that invite reflection and debate. This year, the series focuses on the values of social justice, feminism, and collective struggles with films such as Historias del buen valle (Stories from the Good Valley), L'Olívia i el terratrèmol (Olivia and the Earthquake) or Entre figueres (Among Fig Trees).
Mecal Air Festival 2026
Friday nights have their own name in Poblenou. The Mecal (Barcelona International Short Film and Animation Festival) moves to the gardens of Can Framis (Fundació Privada Vila Casas) with Mecal Air. Every Friday from 10:30 p.m., a selection of thematic short films is screened completely free of charge. The nights are thematic and, for example, we find nights dedicated to comedy, creative advertising or eroticism. In addition, this event has a bar service for drinks and food to enjoy while watching the shorts.
As you can see, summer nights in Barcelona have a fantastic plan: popcorn, friends and a good movie under the stars.
