The MareNostrum 5 supercomputer will receive an additional investment of 90 million

The Government will improve the services of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center within the framework of its new strategy to boost artificial intelligence in Spain

The Government will allocate 90 million euros to improve the performance of the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, within the framework of the executive's strategy for the deployment of Artificial Intelligence in Spain. The 90 million will be allocated to the commissioning of new "highly specialized" clusters that will improve the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS).

Likewise, the new equipment should allow for strengthening the Spanish Supercomputing Network. The actions aim to "significantly" increase the available data processing capabilities. The commitment includes dedicating 20% of MareNostrum 5's capacity to industry, reports ACN.

The strategy also includes initiatives to establish environmentally sustainable Data Processing Centers, through a new regulatory framework that improves the planning of these infrastructures and simplifies administrative procedures, in addition to territorially organizing the implementation of future centers of this type.

In addition, it is planned to create and expand a family of language models in Spanish, Catalan, and other co-official languages that will be called Alia and will have the first results available by the end of summer. The models will have more than 20% training in these languages, compared to less than 5% of current models, according to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function.

It is also planned to promote specialized talent in Artificial Intelligence in a context where there is a great demand for professionals, states the ministry.

1.500 million additional investment

The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the 2024 Artificial Intelligence Strategy, an "ambitious" plan designed to consolidate and expand the use of this technology throughout the economy and public administration. The deployment of the plan ---within which the investment in the BSC-CNS has been included--- will take place in 2024 and 2025 and will have 1,500 million euros of investment, which will be added to the 600 million already mobilized.

The strategy is structured into three axes, which will activate eight action levers. The first axis is the one that affects the BSC-CNS, the second should facilitate the application of AI in the public and private sector ---with investments exceeding 1,000 million--- and the third plans to promote a "transparent, ethical and humanistic" AI.
