Urquinaona square has a new symbol. The statue El Saltador (The Jumper), by Jordi Díez, pays homage to the city embodying universal values such as tolerance and courage, according to its author. The international artist has inaugurated his new work, which stands under the Urquinaona Tower, on the side of the square next to Roger de Llúria.
The sculpture represents a diver at the moment he begins to enter the water, after the fall. He submerges into a steel surface that already covers him up to mid-torso and splashes metal around him.
The surface that receives the diver symbolizes the map of the Catalan capital, which for the author represents "an invitation to penetrate the depth of Barcelona with a new spirit." He proposes to citizens to delve into "a more valuable dimension of the city from commitment and determination."
The figure, which seems to have jumped from the top of the Urquinaona Tower, is three meters high and made of stainless steel. The piece, made entirely by Jordi Díez in one year, is inspired by British diver Tom Daley. The initiative has been promoted and financed by The 19th Hole of Grup Enjoybcn, which has a space for professionals in the Urquinaona Tower.
