The Grec programs one hundred shows and will put more than 100,000 tickets on sale

This year's edition of Barcelona's summer festival is inspired by African culture and will be marked by the recovery of the vast majority of capacities and shows

The Grec Festival prepares an edition that aims to be an explosion of light and optimism after a year marked by restrictions due to covid. It will be held between June 27 and July 31 and will feature 98 shows, 49 at Grec Montjuïc and 49 at Grec Ciutat.

In this edition, the festival will have Africa as a source of inspiration, although it will do so by giving voice and space to the culture we have closest, in Barcelona itself. It will do so following the line that this festival has marked since its creation, that of giving voice to artistic and cultural collectives that often go unnoticed by the general public. A great example is the work that will inaugurate this year's edition, an adaptation of the novel Calle Robadors, by Mathias Enard, directed by Julio Manrique and with a cast of young actors who represent a part of Barcelona's diversity: Arab, Catalan and Castilian culture.

Beyond African culture, in this new edition of Barcelona's summer festival we will also see musical performances such as those by Love of Lesbian or Sopa de Cabra, two groups that are making their debut at this event and will do so at the Grec Theater. Works by renowned directors such as José Corbacho, Pep Tosar, Marc Chornet, Jordi Prat i Coll or Iván Benet will also be appreciated. The festival will also pay special attention to the local talent of women creators, such as Angélica Liddell, María Pagés, Buika, Sílvia Ferrando or Ada Vilaró, among many others.

The festival will also not give up the presence of international creation, with proposals arriving from all continents. Prominent names such as Peter Brook, Brett Bailey, Gregory Maqoma or Serge Aimé Coulibaly will be seen. From June 10, some works and performances that could not be carried out in the last edition will also be seen, such as La casa de los espíritus, directed by Carme Partaceli, or Pedro Páramo, by Mario Gas.

Where and how it will be celebrated

The festival will have 37 spaces and rooms involved in shows, divided between Grec Montjuïc and Grec Ciutat. 103,673 tickets will be put on sale, representing 50% of the total capacity, but the organization hopes to be able to increase this figure if sanitary restrictions allow it.

Regarding tickets and season tickets, the Grec festival will maintain the usual discount policy: depending on the age or quantity of tickets purchased, these discounts will vary.

The final budget for this year's edition will be 3.3 million euros, as some of the programmed productions were produced with a budget of 220,000 euros from last year's budget, which at the time could not be premiered and are now being rescued. In total, Grec 2021 will allocate 900,000 euros to co-productions.
