In the metropolitan area of Barcelona alone, more than 50,000 units of Donuts are distributed daily, a product that is the third most consumed in bars in the bread and pastry category, behind the classic sandwich and croissant. To reduce emissions from this logistical effort, Bimbo has launched a pilot delivery program in Barcelona aimed at small customers in the restaurant sector, whom it wants to supply with electric bicycles.
The brand has chosen a hundred points of sale to test the delivery of its daily Donuts and Bimbo bares range products, with the collaboration of the Barcelona startup Cargobici, which has been working for years on sustainable logistics solutions to tackle the last mile in cities, and which has initially assigned three of its delivery drivers to this task. With this system, orders continue to be delivered within 24 hours, and even within 3 hours if processed urgently. Bicycle delivery covers routes that are currently difficult to reach by conventional delivery.
The project was born as a pilot test in the city ---where Bimbo has its headquarters for the Spanish market--- with the idea of analyzing its evolution and scaling it up by the end of the year, as part of the company's plans to reduce the carbon footprint of its activities.
First, deliveries will have to be extended throughout the city of Barcelona, which will require the establishment of more small warehouses to cover new routes. Cargobici bases its business model on the delivery of small goods from urban micro hubs, where items are transferred from vans or trucks to electric and locally manufactured cargo bikes.
The experience will be extended to Madrid, Zaragoza and Valencia in 2022The short-term goal would be to start by expanding the Barcelona area, opening a second micro-warehouse and starting in 2022 ---depending on how the experience evolves--- to launch the project in other cities. Madrid, Zaragoza and Valencia are the first options, explains Alberto López Oliva, eGTM Manager at Bimbo.
Bimbo's calculations indicate that, if the formula can be extended to 45,000 small bars, it would generate a saving of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, which could reach 350 tons of CO2 per year. Bimbo is committed to the growth of this delivery model so that in the future it can be used by other suppliers in the Horeca channel.
"Bimbo is committed to innovation and to continuing to grow in a sustainable and planet-friendly way," while offering its customers the service that best suits their needs, says Alberto López, who adds that they will close agreements with other companies such as Cargobici to "help grow and extend this type of service to many other cities."
