The collaborative brand Barcelona Catalonia celebrates its 15 years at MIPIM 2022

Incasòl, Barcelona City Council and AMB share a promotion strategy to attract new foreign investments in the Catalan capital and its surroundings. Projects such as the Amazon plant in El Prat de Llobregat and the Viladecans The Style Outlets shopping center were achieved by going together to MIPIM, the international benchmark real estate fair.

To promote Catalonia and its capital through collaboration between public and private agents. This is the secret of Barcelona Catalonia, an alliance led by the Generalitat, through the Catalan Land Institute (Incasòl), the Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). For 15 years, the three administrations have participated in the MIPIM fair accompanied by the main real estate companies to seek foreign investors who want to bring their projects to Barcelona, especially to its metropolitan area.

In an event this Wednesday at the Barcelona headquarters of the Col·legi d'Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC), the three administrations have reviewed these 15 years of collaboration. "After two years of great complexity and without having yet emerged from a context of uncertainty and volatility, today what we are doing is reaffirming this alliance. Our positioning is very clear: Barcelona Catalonia. It is a positioning to attract companies to come and invest in the country with the attractiveness and positioning that Barcelona has, but also the rest of the surrounding areas," explained the director of Incasòl, Mercè Conesa.

It also helps to reinforce this positioning that the three administrations agree on a single message and have the same objectives. "This gives security to investors. In the end, what they want is predictability and to be sure that this territory is a territory that can welcome them," Conesa defended.

Thanks to this collaboration between administrations at MIPIM, a company like Amazon decided to locate in El Prat del Llobregat or the necessary investment was captured to boost the Viladecans The Style Outlets shopping center, Conesa pointed out. "We want the best companies to set up in the city of Barcelona and in the country as a whole, to create the best jobs, that are well paid, and to generate progress and shared wealth. In this, real estate and land development is a priority," remarked the manager of the Economy, Resources and Economic Promotion area of the Barcelona City Council, Albert Dalmau.

For the AMB, the Barcelona Catalonia strategy also allows accompanying metropolitan municipalities in the search for new investors, under the umbrella of the Catalan capital. "We all know that the Barcelona brand is known and recognized worldwide, but from the AMB we want to expand it and promote the values of the different metropolitan municipalities surrounding Barcelona because the metropolitan area is a unique territory and investors do not know borders," added the director of the AMB Economic Development Agency, Anna Hernández.

Main projects to be presented at MIPIM 2022

Barcelona Catalonia will present a wide variety of projects at this edition of MIPIM. There will be opportunities for investors in offices, for both large companies and SMEs and startups, research centers and universities, apartments, and various economic activities, such as logistics, hotels, or retail.

Starting with Barcelona, the Barcelona center project will be explained, which aims to re-economize this area of the city and diversify the activities it hosts, after the COVID crisis highlighted its tourist dependence. La Rambla, Via Laietana, and the Olympic Port are the focuses of this initiative, which contemplates the development of offices and headquarters for corporations, universities and research centers, innovation centers, and spaces for SMEs and startups in buildings that are currently empty or underutilized.

Investment opportunities that will come with the new plan for 22@ will also be announced, which will generate new spaces for economic activity, but will also allocate square meters to housing and public facilities. In this area, projects for new research centers and universities are also sought.

The third city project to be promoted at MIPIM 2022 will be the future La Sagrera station. After many delays, it is expected to generate a new centrality in the city, with enough space to locate new offices, commercial activities, and hotels, which will have a good connection with the rest of the city. New homes will also be built, surrounded by a large urban park, which will become the largest in the Catalan capital.

Beyond the Catalan capital, Barcelona Catalonia will also focus on L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Viladecans, Esplugues de Llobregat, Gavà, and Cerdanyola del Vallès.

From L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, the PDU Granvia will be presented, a project currently in litigation, which is intended to complete the transformation of the second city of Catalonia that began with the creation of the Plaza Europa economic district, which already concentrates 40% of the city's jobs. This new phase will link with the biomedical cluster of Bellvitge Hospital and the Llobregat river, with space to develop economic, tertiary and health, commercial, and hotel activities. On the other side of Barcelona, Sant Adrià de Besòs wants to create new residential areas.
