In May of last year, the registrations for the SomosÚnic@s project were opened, developed by the Fundación ColaCao in collaboration with the Asociación No al Acoso Escolar (NACE). This educational initiative aims to educate primary school students against bullying from a very early age. In Catalunya, more than 16,000 boys and girls from different primary school grades have already participated, totaling 188 centers and 268 teachers who have opted for the educational project.
In the whole of Spain, more than 1,500 schools from all over the country have registered in the first year of operation in the classrooms, which represents more than 10% of the total number of primary education centers. Finally, 146,800 students have been trained against bullying and 2,222 teachers have delivered the program in their classrooms.
Bullying is estimated to affect more than two million boys and girls in Spain. It is one of the main psychological, emotional, social, and educational barriers in the development of children's personality, as well as one of the most silenced problems.
The program has different didactic materials that are available to teachers to work with them in schools free of charge and are available in all the official languages of the country. In addition, its implementation is flexible and can be adapted to the needs of each group.
"Through Somos Únic@s we have detected some cases of low self-esteem at school that, thanks to the program, we have helped them to put words to what they were suffering. The rest of the group has also learned to be more aware of some difficulties in social relationships that apparently went more unnoticed. I think it has been good for us to have a moment to talk and discuss the aspects proposed by the program," they say from the Josep Tous school in Barcelona.
The project has had a very positive impact. More than 96% of teachers say they would be willing to repeat the experience and 97% have considered the program useful, affirming significant changes in the students. "These results encourage us to continue betting on this project and for the message against bullying to reach an ever-increasing number of boys and girls of different ages throughout the country," said Javier Coromina, member of the board of trustees of the Fundación ColaCao.
