The Universitat Abat Oliba (UAO) CEU has opened its 50th-anniversary course by inaugurating a new building, which expands its Bellesguard Campus. The new property has six floors, with three underground and three above ground, providing the university with an additional 5,000 square meters. The new building houses classrooms, work and study rooms, and offices, and is a project by Llongueras Clotet, Buro4, and Gabriel Verd.
As announced by the university at the end of 2021, the expansion will allow for the reorganization of the Bellesguard Campus, and the new building will include spaces such as an auditorium, classrooms with a high student capacity, work rooms, a terrace, and spaces for university employees, among other facilities.
With the construction of the building, the surrounding garden has also been renovated. During these works, medieval remains were found which, according to archaeological studies, correspond to dependencies of the residence that King Martin the Humane used between 1408 and 1410.
The remains have been integrated into the new garden, and confirm that the sovereign established his court in Bellesguard. There was documentary evidence of this fact, but the walls found during the renovation provide the material evidence that proves it. This was confirmed at the inauguration by the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and the Minister of Research and Universities of the Generalitat, Joaquim Nadal, who participated in the event.
The Universitat Abat Oliva CEU celebrates its 50th anniversary with its sights set on its Health project, to strengthen its Faculty of Health and Life SciencesAccording to Collboni, these new facilities of the Universitat Abat Oliva CEU align with the objectives Barcelona should have: "Attract, generate and retain talent". For his part, Nadal expressed his confidence that the facilities will represent an improvement not only for the university, but for the city as a whole.
50th anniversary
The inauguration coincides with the solemn opening of the UAO's academic year, precisely the 50th anniversary of the creation of Abat Oliba as a university institution. It celebrates this anniversary with its sights set on its Health project, to strengthen its Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The half-century of activity of the Universitat Abat Oliva will be commemorated with a program of activities that includes an exhibition, the publication of a book, and concerts.
