The fifth edition of Smart Ports: Piers of the Future will analyze and propose transformative future solutions for ports and maritime transport. The event, framed within the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), will bring together experts in sustainability, innovation, and port technology, and this year will focus on emerging companies in the maritime and port sector. It will also address the relationships between ports and cities, as well as the blue economy and initiatives promoted by the most innovative ports worldwide.

The event will be held from November 7 to 9 at the Fira de Barcelona venue in a fully in-person format, which it already recovered in the last edition after two years marked by the pandemic. The meeting is promoted by the Port de Barcelona together with other port infrastructures around the world that stand out for their innovation.

This year's edition will include a debate on innovation and the relationship between the port and the city, which will be discussed with officials from the ports of Hamburg, Los Angeles, and Antwerp-Bruges, along with mayors of coastal cities. The program also includes a session on new ICT infrastructures and the blue economy, in addition to the presentation of technological advances in maritime transport to move towards a smarter and more sustainable model.

This Monday, the event program was presented, with the participation of the president of the Port de Barcelona, Lluís Salvadó, the director of Innovation and Business Strategy of the port, Emma Cobos, and the co-founder and general director of Smart City, Ugo Valenti. Salvadó highlighted that the port has become a strategic partner of the Fira de Barcelona exhibition because "port cities cannot be smart if they do not have a smart port that integrates sustainably into their urban environment."

The Smart Ports stand at Smart City will feature an innovation area with eight exhibition zones aimed at emerging companies and innovation centers linked to the ecosystem of each of the eight participating ports. Specifically, these are Antwerp-Bruges; Busan, Hamburg, Los Angeles, Montreal, Rotterdam, and Gothenburg, and also attending as guests will be Vancouver, Singapore, Tanger Med, and the Australian Port Authority of New South Wales, which includes the port of Sydney.

Also on the blue economy and port activity and within the SCEWC, on November 7 and 8, the Tech Tour Smart Ports and the Tech Tour Blue Economy will take place, organized by the global investor community Tech Tour. The Smart Ports organization has invited startups from the port sector to present projects in this call for the Tech Tour Blue Economy. Following this call, a hundred initiatives have been presented, of which 30 have been selected, with 15 from the blue economy and 15 from maritime logistics. Two of these projects will be chosen by Tech Blue Economy to receive funding.

In addition, Smart Ports plans to sign a collaboration agreement with the blue economy technology platform Navarium on November 9.
